The 2023 IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report clearly warns: climate change, driven by human activity, is intensifying, and its impacts—especially extreme weather events—are becoming increasingly widespread. The only viable way to redu
ce these risks is through urgent, effective, and equitable climate action. However, achieving the systemic change needed for a truly sustainable future requires more than just technological solutions. It demands a cultural shift—one driven by innovation, education, and community engagement, especially among younger generations.
The CLIMENTRE project responds to this call by promoting climate literacy in European primary schools. Our initiative focuses on raising awareness among both students and teachers about the realities of climate change and the importance of environmentally responsible behavior—starting from an early age, when habits and values are still forming.
Through CLIMENTRE, we aim to empower students not only with knowledge but with a sense of responsibility and agency. By providing ready-to-use digital tools, topic-based learning days, and engaging classroom materials aligned with national curricula, we support teachers in integrating climate education across subjects. These resources are designed to foster creativity, digital competence, and entrepreneurial thinking, while encouraging cross-curricular, project-based learning.
By involving 40 teachers and school leaders, 500 students, and 40 additional stakeholders across Estonia, Greece, and Turkey, and reaching over 1000 individuals through dissemination activities, CLIMENTRE will have a lasting impact at local, national, and European levels. The project cultivates:
Deeper understanding of how climate change affects communities.
Motivation and ability among students to lead small-scale environmental projects.
Increased use of digital media for learning and awareness-building.
Teachers equipped with practical materials for teaching sustainability in a meaningful way.
Stronger school-community ties through climate-focused civic engagement.
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Education plays a critical role in preparing the next generation to face this challenge with knowledge, resilience, and hope. CLIMENTRE contributes to the broader goals of the EU 2020 and 2030 Climate and Energy Frameworks, supporting the transition toward a smarter, more sustainable, and inclusive Europe.
By helping children understand their role in protecting the planet, we are not only educating students—we are shaping the climate-literate citizens of tomorrow.
