DIY Climbing Holds Materials list
By Climber Dad
Foam for the Model: This foam creates the texture for the final shape. You also need to get the right stuff so it doesn't damage while handling it and reacts well with the silicone. I use dry floral foam.
Silicone mold making Rubber: Sure, you can use the 100% silicone caulk. But, buying the good stuff really helps! I recommend this silicone mold making material.
Resin: I've used a bunch of different resins. One of the best for home use that I've found is this polyurethane resin.
Dye: If you are using a polyurethane resin it's important that you use a dye that reacts well with it, like the alumilite dye.
3/8" washer: This will be used in each climbing hold you make. It is recommended to use grade 8 simply because doesn't wear down as fast when taking the bolt in and out all the time. For a home wall setting I've used standard washers for a very long time with great success.
3/8" bolt with long shank: This will be used for the mold making process and the threads don't matter. You can also use a 3/8" wooden dowel instead but I find the bolt to be easier and in most cases cheaper.
7/16" bolt with long shank: This will be used in the mold when pouring the climbing hold. It's not needed and I believe I was the first to do it this way (late 90's) to get more life out of the mold. It is used in the mold when pouring the hold.
Knife: Used for roughing out the shape when modeling the climbing hold from foam. You can also use a compass saw.
Carving tools: This can range anywhere from nice woodcarving or clay sculping tools to a toothpick. It depends on detail you are trying to go with and your style. My favorite tool has been an old metal spoon that I sharpened the edges on and some kind of small pick.
Sanding sponge: Used for the finish shaping process. The thin flexable ones are the best.
3/4" paddle or spade bit: Used to create the pocket for the bolt head to sit. You can go as small as 5/8" but doesn't leave much room for error.
3/8" drill bit: Used to create the bolt hole in the model. This must be strait, perpendicular to the back surface.
hot glue gun: For the mold making process
Cereal box: For the mold making process
Base or leveling board (coming in a future video): For the mold making process
