Climate migration occurs when individuals or communities are forced to relocate due to environmental changes that threaten their safety, livelihoods, or access to resources. These changes may include sea level rise, desertification, extreme weather events, ecosystem collapse, or water scarcity.
The National Park Service acknowledges that climate migration is a growing global phenomenon. Many communities experiencing displacement are among those least responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change. Addressing the challenges associated with climate migration therefore requires a commitment to environmental responsibility, human dignity, and international cooperation.
