About the Workshop and Special Issue
Climate change, weather-related shocks, geopolitical tensions and energy-security concerns are increasingly shaping international financial markets, capital flows, exchange rates and financial stability. Understanding how these risks are transmitted across borders and incorporated into financial decision-making has become a central challenge for researchers, policymakers and regulators.
To advance research in this area, the Journal of International Money and Finance is sponsoring a Special Issue accompanied by a one-day developmental workshop hosted at University College Dublin on 18 November 2026.
The workshop will bring together researchers from finance, economics, econometrics and policy institutions to discuss new evidence on the interaction between climate risk, weather shocks, geopolitical risk and international financial markets.
Selected authors will receive editorial feedback prior to the workshop and discussant feedback during the event. Revised papers will subsequently be considered for publication in the Special Issue through the journal’s standard peer-review process.
Submission to the Special Issue and acceptance to the workshop do not guarantee publication.
Scope of the Special Issue
The Special Issue seeks high-quality empirical and methodological contributions that advance understanding of how climate, weather, geopolitical and energy-security shocks affect international financial systems and the broader economy.
Particular emphasis is placed on research that combines rigorous quantitative methods with clear implications for monetary policy, financial regulation, macroprudential supervision and international finance.
Topics of Interest
The Special Issue welcomes empirical and methodological contributions examining the interaction between climate risk, weather shocks, geopolitical risk and international financial markets.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
Workshop Submission Tracks
Special Issue Paper Track
Authors wishing to be considered for the Special Issue should submit a full paper draft.
Extended abstracts will not be considered for the Special Issue Paper Track.
Submissions should represent original and unpublished research and should not be under consideration elsewhere.
Papers should be prepared according to the Journal of International Money and Finance author guidelines.
PhD Poster Track
Doctoral researchers are invited to submit either full papers or extended abstracts for presentation in a dedicated PhD poster session.
The PhD Poster Track is designed to encourage early-stage research and provide doctoral researchers with feedback from scholars working in finance, economics, econometrics and policy-related fields.
Developmental Review Process
The Special Issue will adopt a developmental review model designed to strengthen contributions before formal journal review.
Authors selected for the Special Issue Paper Track will receive editorial feedback prior to the workshop, allowing them to revise their manuscripts before presentation.
Selected papers will also be assigned discussants during the workshop. Following the workshop, manuscripts may proceed to the Journal of International Money and Finance standard peer-review process, including external refereeing and final editorial decisions.
Acceptance to the workshop does not guarantee publication in the Special Issue.
Organising Institutions
This workshop is hosted by UCD Smurfit School of Business with support from the UCD Earth Institute.
The event aims to provide a focused forum for researchers, policymakers and practitioners interested in the financial and macroeconomic consequences of climate, weather, geopolitical and energy-security risks.
