Oh no! Our planet is dying and we need to save it! Climate change has a massive influence on our daily life here on earth. It keeps getting worse and worse... but how? Do you really understand how global warming works and why the consequences keep getting worse? We present Climate Countdown: the game to learn more about saving the environment in a fun way. We believe the first step to stop climate change is to have knowledge about it.
The board game comes with the gamerule book and drawers, with figurines inside them. It is all packed in nicely into the same box.
The goal of the game is to save your biome and, doing so, save the world as a whole. By answering questions related to climate change you can earn points. With these points you can buy figurines that will improve the green level of your biome.
The board consists of four different pieces. The four players can all take their own piece with them. This way, the game can be played together like a traditional board game, or at different locations. This way it doesn't matter if you somehow can't show up physically.
The physical board works together with our companion app. You can see your points and you can exchange your points for figurines. When you add a figurine to the board, you will instantly see your biome's green level increase on the app.
Of course, the game is called Climate Countdown. Like in real life, time is the biggest enemy of the enviroment. Work together and save the world before it’s too late. Depending on the chosen difficulty, a game takes either 30, 60 or 90 minutes.
Here we'll show you some of the interfaces of the companion app we came up with. Make sure to check them all out in the slideshow below. After a few different iterations we came up with a GUI, from which we believe it works best for you. For instance, we tried to keep the GUI while playing as minimalistic as possible. Also notice the four theme colors being used in most of the app interfaces. This makes the GUI esthetically pleasing as well.
Furthermore, we thought that during the game, the interactive board must always be visible in the app. This way, the players get a good overview of what the status of the board is. We divided the screen while playing the game into three sub-interfaces. In the first interface you can see how well you are doing. You see the statistics of the emission rate, energy consumption and "green level" across the board. As you know, the green level is a indicator of how well you are doing in general. If the average green level hits 90%, you won. In the second sub-interface you can see the time remaining to save the mini-earth. And lastly, in the third sub-interface you get an overview of what upgrades/props you already bought in each biome. Also, each biome has a seperate shop to buy new props.
The last few interfaces are about getting questions in turns. When it is your turn, you can choose the difficulty. Logically, a difficult question will give you more points. If you need the points very badly, it might be smarter to choose a difficult question. So, you need to play a bit tactical as well in order to win. You get the questions asked in multple choice, but you have to read the question and answer within fifteen seconds. In every case you will get an explanation why an answer is right or wrong. This way, you can learn from every question, even if you gamble a question.
