Estonia visit in 26.-30.11.2018
Day 1 - day for getting to know each other, science+CLIL, languages+CLIL, Drones+CLIL
Students and partner students arrived at the school together to start the day with breakfast in Estonian style (porridge and open top sandwiches). Together with teachers, we walked in the school to get to know the place, see the differences in Estonian and Latvian education – there were more similarities than expected. The day followed with double science lesson of making physics test with Estonian students and German language lesson, where teacher explained how she teaches and what the tricks to learn languages easier were. In addition, the Latvian language was explained, and cultural event song festival vas enjoyed. After lunch, there were drone lessons by the extracurricular manager and student-teachers form Estonia.
Day 2 - Art and animation +CLIL, International evening
A day for art. The morning started with double animation lessons where sand animation and other animation topics were introduced, followed by more art lessons in many different classes of drawing and painting or other. For the teacher’s deeper level CLIL sharing with cultural and curriculum differences took place. Tuesday was also the day to go in the real world to familiarise with shopping and walking near the school area. In the evening, there was a cultural night with families and visitors, sharing dances, games, and stories from all of the participant’s countries.
Day 3 - Stress and CLIL, visiting Ehte Gymnasium, Bowling and Shopping
Day started with visiting partner student’s lessons. From our minds, we could not make any difference anymore who was from whose country, as everyone had just assimilated s well to Estonian school life. The CLIL lesson was about finding out things of yourself – your beliefs, values, and outlook on life. The school psychologist offered the stress lesson and creative drawing was used. Then it was a time to visit neighboring Russian language school, where many different students from Russia to Ukraine to wherever were introducing their language and culture. The evening ended with sports activities with bowling and shopping – you need to move a litte when your brain is full of new experiences and words.
Day 4 - Cyber, Math and Video editing; old town visit
Pelgulinna Gymnasium one of the traits is technology education, also cybersecurity. The lesson about cybersecurity discussed the cyber role in the world and how the world has changed for the youth. Then followed with math lesson that displayed that some things change and some don – methodologies will change, but math is pretty much the same in every country. Day second half was conducted in the city center – an old town that had just opened up the Christmas market. There were historical tour and lessons, those later inspired teachers to make up a quiz that was later used in the farewell party.
Day 5 - The European biggest Robotic event is held: https://robotex.ee/
At coldest and windiest day this week was about getting new experiences of visiting robotic competition and fair called Robotex. There were many different events to see from smaller to bigger robots going against each other; fail you could see self-driving cars, robots that carry goods, virtual reality, 3D screens made of impellers and more. After the fair we walked through the hard weather conditions to see the Memorial - Estonia lost one of every five persons from its population of slightly over one million as a consequence of the occupying regime’s terror policy. The Estonian people and the Estonian state have established this memorial in 2018 in memory of Estonia’s victims of communism. The evening we had a farewell party with families. For preparing the event students made three cakes – ham and cheese sandwiches cake; tuna and egg sandwiches cake; cookies and cream cheesecake. At the evening different mental and physical games were played, certificates and thanks were shared, speeches were told. The most active game was a music quiz that displayed that no matter how old you are (are you a teacher, parent or high school student or whatever country you are in) you still know 80-90 pop artist and their lyrics and American TV-series/film game music themes by your heart.

Latvia visit in March 19.-24.03.2018
Day 1
On Monday the 19th of March we began our international Erasmus+ project "Expanding CLIL by Using Technologies" in Riga, Latvia. We, the students of Riga English Grammar School, greeted our guests from Estonia and Italy and gave them a tour around our school but later went to show them some of the most beautiful and interesting spots in Riga, before meeting up for our national evening. After listening to presentations about the 3 countries the students enjoyed the national dishes and cuisine of each country. Throughout the evening we also got to know our guests better while singing, dancing and participating in different fun activities!
Day 2
As we continue with our Erasmus+ CLIL project, on Tuesday the 20th of March we participated in our first lessons together – in Physical Education the students of Latvia, Estonia and Italy joined up for different team building activities such as photo orientation around the school and various games, but in Physics with the guidance of our directress Maija Kokare we learned about torque and tried it out on our own while experimenting.
Day 3
On Wednesday the 21st of March in our lessons we learned about the music traditions in Latvia, Estonia and Italy, meanwhile the Latvian students prepared 2 musical performances for the guests. Later we started working on the film where everyone had to participate in specific scenes. In the evening the students and the teachers went bowling and had a great time.
Day 4 and 5
On Thursday the 22nd of March after our lessons and film making activities the students went on a guided tour of one of the most interesting and modern buildings in Riga – the National Library of Latvia. During the tour the guests from Italy and Estonia learnt not only about the building itself but also about the cultural heritage of Latvia.
On the final day of our Erasmus+ project “Expanding CLIL By Using Technologies” we, the participating students and teachers, went on a fun excursion to Cinevilla – the only open air “cinema city” in the Baltic States and the largest in Northern Europe. Continuing our theme of film making we had the opportunity to see how professional movies are made and to shoot some clips on the green screen on our own. We finished our project with a closing event, but later the students enjoyed the Spring ball. We can’t wait to see you again in Estonia and Italy!
