All events are free of charge and virtual unless noted otherwise. All times are US Central time.
CLF Chicago hosts a quarterly meetup in-person in downtown Chicago. Follow us on LinkedIn or sign up for Illinois Green Alliance's events newsletter for updates on date/time/location for this recurring event. This informal meetup is free to attend and open to all! Typically attendees share updates on embodied carbon work they're doing, share resources, and ask each other questions.
Recorded Events
Crafting Low-Carbon Specifications
02.25.2025
Hear from Andy Marolt and Kaitlin Veenstra of Ryan Companies on their work developing a low-carbon specifications template using the CLF Material Baselines and EC3 tool, and implementing it on projects.
Biogenic Carbon and Novel Materials: Hemp, Straw, Fungi, and Algae Cement
11.17.2022
Co-hosted with CLF Nashville
Hear from four designers and entrepreneurs in the biogenic materials space:
Loren Burnett, Prometheus Materials

Circular Economy in Practice Series
Part 1: Circular Economy Thinking: Tools of the Trade
Part 1 introduces 3 tools helping solve inventorying hurdles for owners and design teams looking to make visible the design and sourcing opportunities. Learn a bit about what each platform offers from a design, procurement, and owner perspective regarding using existing versus purchasing new. The landscape of inventorying in the AEC industry is changing rapidly thanks to these tools.
Panelists:
Eszter Csicsai - Rheaply
Kaila Bryzgalski - Steelcase
Patty Lloyd - Leopardo
Circular Economy in Practice Series
Part 2: Circular Economy Thinking: Design and Procurement (08.24.22 12pm-1pm)
It takes a special lens to watch for opportunities in circularity and put them to practice. Part 2 features 3 individuals responsible for evaluating the feasibility of reuse in design and procurement and changing AEC practices in the process. Each panelist represents a different phase of the design and procurement process. The panel will focus on where their efforts are connected, and where there’s a variance so we can all work collectively to solve observed process and feasibility gaps.
Panelists:
Pam Francis, Schott Design
Andrew Ellsworth, Doors Unhinged
Anne Nicklin, Rebuilding Exchange
January 25, 2022: SE2050 Introduction
SE 2050, launched two years ago, is a challenge to the structural engineering industry to report, reduce, and ultimately reach net zero embodied carbon in its work. CLF Chicago is convening a discussion with representatives from different firms around the U.S., about their successes and challenges in putting the SE 2050 commitment into action. Hear from national sustainability leaders representing SOM Structural, KPFF, MKA and Thornton Tomasetti about their efforts and how the entire A/E/C industry can get behind this important work.
October 19, 2021: Less is More?
One key design principle for reducing carbon emissions is to build with less material. But… what happens when that principle conflicts with designing more energy efficient buildings? Scott Farbman will be presenting Databased+’s recent analysis results research on the carbon impact of refrigerant based HVAC systems and triple glazed window systems on Chicago high-rise buildings. Join us to hear about the study and understand the tradeoff between upfront and operational carbon.
July 22, 2021: Wood For A Lighter Carbon Footprint
Wood has been used as a building material for millennia. When it comes to a sustainable built environment, material choices matter. Wood is natural, renewable, and sustainable material for building, with a lighter carbon footprint than steel or concrete. Interested in understanding more about the role of wood products in Green Building? Overview of wood specifications, codes, and carbon benefits followed by a panel discussion.
The Role of Refrigerants in Reducing Carbon Emissions
June 29, 2021
Presentation and panel discussion diving into the role of refrigerants in reducing carbon emissions.
Electrification and Reducing Emissions in Existing Buildings
May 25, 2021
While we aren't able to share the recording here, you can find a webinar on the partnership here and learn more about Ozinga's efforts here.
Our first event was an overview of the embodied carbon challenge our industry faces. We've shared an online version of that discussion here.
