Mission

CEI is an annual week-long summer public speaking program geared toward preparing middle school and high school students for competitive speech and debate. Now in its fourth year, the fast-growing program has helped countless students learn the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation while gaining exposure to areas such as current events, politics, economics, and social issues. Our goal for CEI is to let young Extemporaneous Speaking competitors reach the next level of competition and become the best speakers they can be by providing an in-depth, holistic understanding of Extemp.

Structure

Lectures

Each day will include multiple content lessons covering areas of current domestic and foreign affairs to give students a better understanding of potential speech topics. Areas covered in the past include political spectra, the Middle East, and introductory economics. Building this foundation will help students better understand current events and will allow them to construct intelligent and convincing arguments. Content lessons are accompanied by lectures discussing speech structure, presentation, and mechanics.

Drills

Since the best method of learning is doing, students will participate in interactive drills to hone their public speaking abilities! Examples of such activities include practicing gestures, preparing and delivering introductions, and brainstorming arguments as a group. The purpose of these drills is to give students the chance to apply the content and skills learned in lectures while receiving constructive feedback from instructors. In this part of the program, students learn how to think on their feet and gain confidence presenting in front of others.

Rounds

The final two days of the program will be dedicated to simulating a real four-round tournament! This will allow students to earn valuable competition experience while showcasing the skills they developed during the week. Since the tournament follows a format very similar to local, state, and national competitions, students will leave the program knowing exactly what to expect at the start of the speech and debate season. Following this tournament, students will receive constructive feedback for each of their speeches (using official OSDA ballots) that will allow them to continue to make individual progress even after the program is over.

Pricing

The cost for each attendee is $125 for the week. We also offer a $25 refund for each additional student you refer -- yes, this means you will attend for free if you refer 5 students! In the case of financial limitations, please let us know and we can make accommodations to our fee structure.
