In 2009, Richard Allington’s research found that “literally hundreds of correlational studies find that the best readers read the most and that poor readers read the least. These correlational studies suggest that the more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension” (National Reading Panel, 2000, p. 12).
When students don’t read over the summer, then summer reading loss, the backsliding in reading development, can occur during the summer vacation months.
