This is Not Your Parents’ LASIK

Customized All-Laser LASIK eye surgery (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the next evolution of vision correction and has become the most effective elective procedure in the world. Customized All-Laser LASIK eye surgery is used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Additionally, your eye doctor can now treat minor imperfections in your cornea to give you better day and night vision than your glasses or contacts ever could. If you don’t want to wear contact lenses or glasses, Customized All-Laser LASIK may be what you’ve been looking for.

The laser refractive surgery procedure is performed in minutes, and recovery is quick. Most of our patients are seeing 20/20 or better by the next day and returning to normal activities soon after!

How it Works

Customized All-Laser LASIK is a quick and comfortable three-step procedure. Using the latest in laser technology, we first create a precise natural bandage, also known as a flap, on the surface of your eye. In the second step, another laser works by gently reshaping the cornea of your eye underneath the natural bandage to bring the world into better focus. This gives the cornea a new shape so that light rays are focused clearly on the retina. The natural bandage is returned in the last step, and your vision is corrected!

More FAQs about Customized All-Laser LASIK

WHAT IS LASIK?

The term “LASIK,” which stands for “Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis,” (also known as in situ keratomileusis) refers to one of the most popular surgical techniques used today. Sub-Bowman keratomileusis (SBK) or “thin flap (surgery)” LASIK and the type of LASIK we perform most often at ClearSight, is a more recent variation of this laser vision correction technique, is equally effective for treating farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness (myopia), presbyopia, and astigmatism.

Laser Treatment For Eyes

An advanced analysis of your eye that thoroughly maps, with corneal topography, the inside and surface of your eye gives our doctors at ClearSight LASIK the ability to achieve total accuracy during your LASIK procedure. With these advancements in technology, many patients who were formerly told they were ineligible for LASIK eye surgery or one of the six current LASIK alternatives because they were too old, too young, or had astigmatism are now candidates.

HOW IS CUSTOMIZED ALL-LASER LASIK DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL LASIK?

While every LASIK procedure is tailored to the patient’s needs, Customized All-Laser LASIK looks at the corneal topography, refraction (corrective lens prescription), your best visual acuity, and over-all health of your eye to determine the best laser treatment for you and your visual needs. The excimer laser reshapes your cornea to correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE FOR CUSTOM ALL-LASER LASIK SURGERY?

After having LASIK, recovery is a quick and simple procedure. Within a day or two following custom laser eye surgery, the majority of patients resume most of their normal activities. After LASIK, most individuals can see properly within 48 hours, but it takes three to six months for your improved vision to settle completely.

In the weeks after laser vision correction surgery, you may notice some glare during your healing phase, but you’ll continue to see benefits on a daily basis. You will also want to make sure that you do not participate in contact sports, wear eye makeup and swim for 24 hours to 1 week, depending on what procedure you have. Recovery after LASIK laser eye surgery is often a simple procedure as long as you adhere to the instructions given by your physician, use the medicated eye drops, and make sure to safeguard your eye. You will return to your eye doctor for an eye exam after surgery when directed by your LASIK surgeon.

HOW LONG DOES LASIK LAST?

The cornea of the eye is permanently reshaped during LASIK eye surgery for the rest of your life. However, as the body continues to age, the eye will also age and change, leading to some age-related eye conditions such as presbyopia or cataracts. On rare occasions, a LASIK enhancement or retreatment is needed due to the first procedure not achieving the full desired effect. Such enhancements are typically included in the cost of LASIK at ClearSight.

HOW LONG DOES LASIK SURGERY TAKE?

The LASIK procedure only takes around 15 minutes to complete. However, you should plan to be in the office for around 2-3 hours on the day of your vision correction procedure. This will allow time for any necessary paperwork, any additional testing needed before the procedure begins, the LASIK procedure, and time to recover afterward.

WHAT IS SBK?

LASIK was first performed using a microkeratome or mechanically controlled blade. Patients were able to safely stop using their contacts and glasses as a result of this method’s high effectiveness, which resulted in clearer vision. However, there were many surgeons who believed there could be a more precise way to perform a LASIK procedure and also allow for the treatment of patients with thin corneas. The femtosecond laser utilized in SBK was created in response to this need for greater accuracy. This new laser offers greater comfort, precision, predictability, and accuracy. This has made it possible for many patients who were previously ineligible for LASIK laser surgery to now benefit from the independence and confidence that SBK LASIK offers.

WHAT IS WAVEFRONT?

The most recent LASIK technology is called Wavefront optimized LASIK. By giving the most accurate representation of the human eye while planning the entire procedure, Wavefront gives options to help map the eye and support laser eye surgery. Wavefront-optimized, wavefront-guided, and topography-guided LASIK treatments are used to achieve this, providing each patient with a totally individualized course of treatment. The comprehensive map of the cornea provided by wavefront-guided LASIK surgery is comparable to a topographical map for your surgeon. Your surgeon can see and plan for even the smallest variances or complexities thanks to this map.

LASIK with wavefront optimization makes it feasible to keep the natural shape of your cornea, remove the smallest amount of tissue possible, which was previously not possible.

DOES IT HURT?

We are glad to say that our procedures are virtually painless. You will probably feel a little pressure. We will also use a numbing eye drop to help keep you comfortable. We will provide you with a mild sedative to calm your nerves and keep you comfortable throughout your time with us. The good news is no anesthesia is needed!

HOW MUCH WILL MY PROCEDURE COST?

Your treatment is based on your unique visual needs and your prescription (refractive error), so pricing varies. At your exam we will give you a custom quote for your recommended treatment. We will also explain our low monthly payment options, which we offer for all of our refractive procedures.

Most insurance does not cover LASIK, but may offer a possible savings as an incentive to help you become glasses free!

WILL I STILL HAVE TO WEAR GLASSES?

Our goal is to get you out of glasses completely. That is why we offer our 20/20 or it’s FREE guarantee – if you aren’t seeing 20/20 or better after your procedure, we will refund your entire procedure cost.

WILL LASIK GET CHEAPER?

As technology continues to improve, so does ClearSight. We are dedicated to using the most advanced lasers to give you the best results. A common misconception is that LASIK will get cheaper, but as our technology improves our prices could increase.

WHAT IF MY DOCTOR HAS TOLD ME I’M NOT A CANDIDATE FOR LASIK?

We are able to help 95% of people who walk through our doors. We offer multiple refractive surgeries to make sure we can help almost everyone, including individuals who may have been told no in the past. The best way to find out if you are a candidate is to come in for your free exam.

WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE? WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK?

Most LASIK patients see an improvement immediately after their procedure, and even better results the next morning. It depends on your procedure and your type of employment, but we expect most patients to be driving the very next day, and back at work a day or two later.

WHICH TYPE OF LASIK IS RIGHT FOR ME? AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LASIK?

We usually recommend the All-Laser LASIK procedure for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism who are 18-42 years old, or as a part of the treatment plan for those age 43 and over.

Overwhelmed with research? Our Patient Care Coordinators are ready to help you navigate all your options. Give us a call at 405-722-2020. Prefer to research on your own? You can take a quick SELF TEST to find out which procedure might be the best for you.

CAN LASIK GET RID OF READERS AND BIFOCALS?

While LASIK is a fantastic procedure that corrects your distance vision, it can not help with readers and bifocals. Don’t worry though, we can still help! Our sister practice 43Vision specializes in correction solutions for patients who want to get rid of readers and bifocals. Learn more at their website: 43VISION.COM.

WHAT ARE THE LASIK RISKS? ARE YOUR PROCEDURES SAFE?

All-Laser LASIK is widely considered to be very safe. This procedure has been performed over 40 million times worldwide and has a very low risk of complications.

However, nothing in life is risk free, and the same is true for all medical procedures. One of the possible risks is an infection of the eye, but as long as you use the medication (eye drops), follow the instructions from your eye surgeon, and safeguard your eyes, your chances will be very slight.

But studies have shown that vision correction procedures including LASIK, EVO ICL, SMILE, and PRK are actually safer than wearing contacts over time. Most of our staff, including every one of our surgeons, has had vision correction with great results and no major complications. Our procedures have all been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and all of the risks and benefits evaluated.

Of the more than 10,000,000 Americans who have had LASIK since the 90’s, experienced surgeons have reported a less than 3% complication rate. Those complications were mostly related to quality of vision issues such as dry eyes and reduced night vision, and even these side effects have significantly improved with advances in technology.

Studies show that there is more risk from prolonged use of contacts than something going wrong during the LASIK procedure.

WHAT DOES THE 20/20 GUARANTEE REALLY MEAN?

Our 20/20 Money Back Guarantee means that if you have 20/20 vision with your glasses or contacts, we’ll help you achieve 20/20 vision without them after your procedure with us. If not, we’ll refund your fee in full. This Money Back Guarantee exists to assure you that you’ll achieve the vision you want. This guarantee, which is only offered at a handful of eye centers nationwide, is offered on all LASIK, SMILE, PRK, and EVO Visian ICL procedures performed at ClearSight. See our written vision plans for full details.

How Long Does LASIK Take?

September 13, 2022 | LASIK

Without a doubt, LASIK has dramatically changed how patients see the world more clearly. No longer are individuals with refractive errors solely confined to glasses or contact lenses. Instead, LASIK and other laser eye procedures enable people who would often need corrective eyeglasses to see perfectly without any assistance. LASIK can correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and to some extent, the need for reading glasses (presbyopia).

However, the idea of being treated with a laser might be unsettling for many individuals contemplating LASIK. ClearSight's highly qualified medical team is committed to ensuring your time with us is relaxing, fun, and, most importantly, completely life-changing. We will make sure all your LASIK questions are answered and that you feel confident in your decision to undergo laser vision correction. Knowing what to anticipate helps make patients feel more at ease and confident about the procedure. How long the LASIK procedure takes is one of the most frequently asked questions we get.

How long does LASIK laser vision correction take from start to finish?

The actual LASIK procedure (LASER-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is surprisingly very quick. Your LASIK LASER VISION CORRECTION procedure will likely take less than 10 minutes per eye, with the actual laser correction only taking place for 20–120 seconds of that total time. This information is tremendously comforting for many patients who are worried or apprehensive about the possibility of laser vision correction. More goes into a successful LASIK procedure than just the actual laser treatment, so let's cover what happens before, during, and after.

What happens before my LASIK procedure?

Preparation for your LASIK procedure starts at your initial, free consultation. During this thorough yet gentle eye exam, ClearSight's experienced staff will perform an ocular analysis that will give the eye doctor important information about your eyes. Your initial exam will use our cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, and we'll be able to tell you precisely if LASIK or another vision correction procedure is ideal for your eyes.

One of our doctors will perform a physical eye exam followed by a thorough medical history of your eyes and eye health. The eye doctor will then review the examination findings, note if you are a suitable candidate for LASIK vision correction, and recommend courses of action for improved vision.

Your ClearSight patient care coordinator will go over the specifics and cost of your custom LASIK procedure when your evaluation is complete. We take patient education seriously, and our ultimate objective is to provide you with all the knowledge you need to make a decision confidently. If you are a candidate for LASIK, you don't have to arrange your LASIK procedure immediately and can schedule it whenever you are ready.

What happens on the day of my LASIK procedure?

On the day of your LASIK procedure, you will be in ClearSight's Oklahoma City office for about two hours. Even though the actual LASIK treatment only takes a few minutes, the rest of your time will be spent completing patient forms, preparing for the procedure, and recovering afterward.

Preparing for the procedure

All LASIK patients have a somewhat unique corneal curvature. As a result, each person's cornea's natural shape will need to be reshaped. Your LASIK surgeon will perform corneal topography (essentially a photograph for the front of the eye) to precisely and accurately understand how your cornea is shaped. This non-invasive medical imaging method is used to map the cornea's surface curvature. Your LASIK laser eye surgeon will use this topography to precisely note where your eyes need to be laser-treated to lessen and eventually eradicate the refractive issues that keep you dependent on prescription glasses or contact lenses.

The LASIK treatment

Once the doctor is ready to begin your LASIK procedure, you will be given eye drops to numb your eyes so that you won't feel anything when the laser treatment starts. This numbing effect will take around 10 seconds to set in. Your eyes will then be covered with a device to help keep them open during the procedure.

Next, the LASIK treatment is performed by your eye surgeon using an excimer laser and a femtosecond laser. The femtosecond laser created a thin flap in order to access the deeper cornea tissue for treatment. To accomplish the necessary reshaping needed in the strategy revealed in your corneal topography, a second laser is used to then flatten or steepen this cornea tissue. You will be required to stare at a target within the laser throughout this time. It takes around two minutes to complete this step. The corneal flap is then repositioned over the eye and allowed to heal when the laser therapy is finished.

After the procedure

Your eyes will be examined right after your procedure, and you'll get detailed instructions on how to take care of them while they're recuperating. Once you have received your prescription eye drops and your eye surgeon feels you are recovering well, you will be sent on your way.

You will need someone to drive you home since you may experience blurred vision immediately after your procedure. We advise you to return home and rest for a few hours. Although initial healing starts right away, be sure to allow your eyes enough time to rest during the first several hours after your procedure.

Many patients see vision improvement immediately following their treatment and most will see even greater outcomes the next morning. The day after your LASIK treatment, you'll have a follow-up visit with your surgeon to see how your vision is doing. Most LASIK patients can go back to work the following day.

Your surgeon will go over any limitations that are particular to your procedure and your specific way of life before your LASIK treatment.

How Long is the Recovery After LASIK?

December 20, 2022 | LASIK

A LASIK vision correction procedure might be the solution you've been looking for if you're tired of having to wear glasses and contacts and want to wake up every morning with clear vision. LASIK can treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. After your eyes have recovered from your LASIK treatment, many patients are able to stop wearing their glasses and contact lenses permanently.

The team of board-certified surgeons at ClearSight LASIK are national leaders in vision correction. With decades of combined experience, our team is dedicated to providing each of our patients with a life-changing experience. From your initial LASIK consultation through your recovery, we take care of our patients and will address any concerns along the way.

When considering a LASIK procedure, patients often ask us how long the recovery process will take. In this article, we will answer this question along with other frequently asked questions about the recovery process. Call our office today for more information or to schedule your consultation to see if you're a candidate for LASIK. We would love to be a part of your journey to visual freedom and answer any questions you have about LASIK.

How long is the LASIK recovery process?

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery normally requires six to twelve hours of initial healing time. However, this can vary from patient to patient and is influenced by a variety of factors, such as the degree of inflammation. Most LASIK patients can see perfectly within 24 hours of their procedure, while some need to rest for two to five days. After LASIK, some patients may temporarily experience glare, halos, and fluctuating vision for a few weeks and, in some cases, a few months.

Your eyes will start to heal as soon as the procedure is finished, but the full recovery following LASIK usually takes four to six weeks. At your follow-up appointments, our skilled surgeons will keep track of your healing progress and offer you a better idea of your specific recovery timeframe.

More FAQ's about LASIK Recovery

What will take place the day I have LASIK?

Even though LASIK procedures only takes around 15 minutes, you can expect to spend about two hours at ClearSight LASIK in our Oklahoma City clinic. Additionally, since you may experience blurry vision and won't be able to drive, you'll need to plan a ride home with a friend or family member on the day of your procedure. Before starting the procedure, we occasionally repeat some of the tests done during your initial ClearSight LASIK consultation.

Before the LASIK procedure begins, you will be given eye-numbing drops, and a soft eyelid holder will be inserted so you won't have to worry about blinking. The laser eye correction process, which starts with the excimer laser treatment and lasts about 20 seconds for each eye, will then begin using advanced laser technology. Following your LASIK procedure, your surgeon will provide you with post-operative instructions and protective eye shields to wear while you sleep for the first two nights.

When can I drive after LASIK?

Although everyone's recovery timeline is different, and you should follow your doctor's advice regarding postop care for your particular situation, you are typically allowed to drive the day after surgery. If your vision is improving and you are healing as anticipated, your eye doctor will allow you to drive after your follow-up appointment.

Will my recovery from LASIK be painful?

Most LASIK patients feel little to no discomfort during or after their procedure, if any at all. After laser vision correction, it is typical to have itchy, dry, or irritated eyes, but you shouldn't experience severe pain. You will be given eye drops by your surgeon to ease any discomfort, eliminate dry eye, and accelerate the healing process. Contact ClearSight LASIK right away if you have any questions about any signs and symptoms you may be experiencing.

When can I wash my hair after LASIK?

You can wash your hair the day after your LASIK procedure. You should take additional care to avoid getting soap or water in your eyes when taking a shower or washing your hair, especially in the first week after LASIK.

Is there anything I can do to speed up my recovery from LASIK?

Patients who have undergone LASIK vision correction are elated to have clear eyesight and are anxious to resume their regular lives. You may accelerate your healing and prevent any setbacks by using these tips for LASIK recovery:

  • Avoid touching your eyes

  • Do not rub your eyes

  • Limit your screen time.

  • Rest and relax as much as you can

  • Attend every follow-up appointment

  • Follow the directions provided for any eye drops.

  • For a week, refrain from using face lotion or cosmetics.

  • When in bright light, wear sunglasses.

  • Skip the hot tub, swimming, and contact sports.

  • Follow your LASIK surgeon's recommendations

How long after LASIK until I can see 20/20?

LASIK eye surgery recovery time frames can differ from person to person. However, many LASIK patients see 20/20 by the next day, assuming that you do not have any other ocular conditions that would limit the potential of your eye to reach 20/20 vision; this will be known beforehand and determined at your pre-operative appointment. Although visual perception is frequently very good, this does not mean that the healing process is complete, and patients should carefully follow their doctor's instructions.

How long will I need to sleep with eye shields after LASIK?

The LASIK procedure, which has been authorized by the Food and Drug Administration, consists of two stages. In the first step, your eye surgeon creates a corneal flap that is lifted, and the procedure is finished by carefully resealing this flap into place. In the second step of LASIK, the cornea is reshaped using a different laser to correct vision.

The corneal flap must not be disturbed for the first week following a LASIK procedure which is why eye protection is advised. It is very secure after 48–72 hours, but if you apply too much pressure in one area as the eyes heal, particularly in the first 72 hours, you could possibly move the flap's edge. To help prevent this issue, we encourage patients to wear eye shields at night.

We advise utilizing eye shields while sleeping at night or while taking naps for the first several days following vision correction procedures. Patients should also use extreme caution and avoid rubbing their eyes to avoid putting pressure on the eye and instead use a clean tissue to carefully dab the eye. It is best not to touch your eyes as they heal.

What should I do for the first 24 hours after my LASIK procedure?

According to LASIK experts, you should use the first 24 hours following your laser procedure to rest. During this period, LASIK patients should avoid reading, using computers, exercising vigorously, and watching television. Wearing sunglasses is essential since you will be light sensitive after your LASIK treatment. As you recover from LASIK, protecting your eyes will keep you comfortable and speed up the healing process.

You can take a shower the day after your surgery, but avoid getting water or soap in your eyes.

Any prescription medication, over-the-counter analgesic, artificial tears, or lubricating eye drops your doctor recommends should be taken as directed.

When can I wash my face after LASIK?

Generally speaking, you shouldn't wash your face for at least 24 hours after having LASIK. Just like when you take a shower, you must refrain from getting water or soap in your eyes while washing your face for at least a few days. When using face wash, take your time and rinse it off slowly, being careful not to spray any water. Because the soap is more likely to drip into your eyes from your forehead than anywhere else, think about avoiding it totally. When it's time to dry your face, gently massage your skin with a towel, keeping your eyes out of the way.

Most patients wash their faces successfully throughout the LASIK healing period by simply following the advice above. Additionally, there are a few facial cleansing methods that eye specialists advise using to lessen the likelihood of getting something in your eyes.

One approach to washing your face without water or soap is to pour a face toner onto a cotton pad and apply it gently to dry skin. As an alternative, you can wipe your face with a damp washcloth to get rid of extra oil and debris. With either strategy, be careful to avoid your eyes.

What can you not do while you are recovering from LASIK?

While laser vision correction on the human eye is a quick, painless procedure with little recovery time, patients must take steps to guarantee that the healing process is as quick and painless as possible. To reduce the risk of infection, patients should avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, saunas, and other bodies of water for at least two weeks after their treatment. It is also recommended to wear goggles for a few weeks after that. Although we understand that patients are eager to resume their normal routine with clear vision, it is crucial to give your eyes enough time to recuperate before engaging in rigorous exercise. You should also avoid contact sports for at least a week.

You shouldn't spend a lot of time looking at your phone or computer screen for the first 24 to 48 hours following your LASIK procedure. This will allow your eyes to recuperate and lessen any further strain that these kinds of screens may cause.

Following their procedure, LASIK surgery patients should not wear eye makeup for approximately one week. At your consultation, your LASIK surgeon will go over the LASIK recovery time recommendations. Follow your doctor's recommendations to ensure a speedy and trouble-free recovery for your eyes.
