Lab Director - yzhang@csusm.edu
I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at California State University, San Marcos. I completed my Ph.D. in developmental psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago.
My research draws upon sociocultural theory to understand the mechanisms of children's learning and education from infancy to middle childhood. My projects investigate how various contexts- such as everyday practices, family attitudes, cultural values, and beliefs- shape the learning and interaction in families from diverse backgrounds.
Dr. Yu Zhang leads the CLC Lab and works closely with a graduate students and team of dedicated research Assistants. Meet them below:

Research Assistant - shaab005@csusm.edu
Hello, my name is Nasrin Shaaban. I recently graduated in Fall 2024 from Cal State University of San Marcos with a B.A. in Psychological Science. I joined Dr. Zhang’s lab in November 2024 to expand my research skills and explore cognitive psychology among multicultural backgrounds. Coming from a multicultural background myself, I would like to research more about learning beliefs, perception of mental health, access to early intervention, and quality of parent-child relationships across different ethnicities.
I hope to go to grad school to become a Licensed School Psychologist while also obtaining my licensure to become a Professional Clinical Counselor. I believe all children and adolescents deserve access to quality education while receiving social, emotional, and behavioral support. When I have time I enjoy reading mystery books, making jewelry, hanging out with friends, and trying to learn how to crochet.
