HISTORIQUE DU CLAVICORDE - HISTORY OF THE CLAVICORDE
From the late 14 th or early 15 th century until its abandonment around 1820, the clavichord was an extremely popular keyboard musical instrument in Europe and beyond. The Italian-German origin is probable . There were hundreds of them throughout Europe, especially in Germany, Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula. The first Western instrument known to the imperial court of Japan was a clavichord. Latin America imported them and then built them. The evolution of the clavichord from its origins followed the transformations of musical tastes and the mutations of the social context of musical practice. The main sound qualities of the clavichords are the subtlety, the sensitivity of the playing and the elegance of the sound, all characteristics which allow great musical expressiveness. Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach considered the clavichord to be far superior to any other keyboard instrument for its expressive potential, despite its relatively low volume.
