How to Leave a Google Classroom
Leaving a Google Classroom is a straightforward process for students who no longer need access to a class, such as after completing a course or if enrolled by mistake. While teachers manage class rosters, students can unenroll themselves in most cases unless restricted by school settings. Here’s how to do it, step by step.
For Students: Unenrolling from a Class
Start by signing into your Google account and visiting classroom.google.com. On the homepage, you’ll see tiles for all your active classes. Find the class you want to leave. Click the three-dot menu (More) in the top-right corner of that class tile. From the dropdown, select "Unenroll." A confirmation pop-up will appear—click "Unenroll" again to confirm. Once done, the class will disappear from your dashboard, and you’ll no longer receive updates or notifications for it.
Important Notes
If the "Unenroll" option is grayed out or missing, it’s likely because your school’s administrator has disabled self-unenrollment. In this case, contact your teacher or IT administrator to request removal. Also, leaving a class doesn’t delete your submitted work—teachers can still access it, but you won’t see the class materials anymore.
For Teachers: Archiving Instead of Leaving
Teachers can’t "leave" their own classes but can archive them when they’re no longer active. Go to the class, click the three-dot menu, and choose "Archive." This removes it from the active list while preserving all content for future reference. To fully delete an archived class, go to the "Archived" section, select the class, and choose "Delete" from the menu—though this is permanent.
Leaving or archiving a Google Classroom keeps your dashboard tidy and ensures you’re only engaged with current classes, making navigation simpler for everyone.
