Located on Haliburton Road in historic Pictou, the museum and genealogy centre provide visitors with an opportunity to explore the history of Dr. Thomas McCulloch, Scottish immigration to Nova Scotia, and the development of Pictou County.
Pictou has a particularly important place in Scottish-Canadian history. Beginning in 1773, ships carrying Scottish immigrants arrived in Pictou Harbour, helping establish the community that became known as the “Birthplace of New Scotland.” (Tourism Nova Scotia)
The McCulloch House
The historic McCulloch House was built around 1806 as the home of Rev. Dr. Thomas McCulloch and his family. The brick house is recognized for its historical association with McCulloch, its Lowland Scottish architectural style and its age. (Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library)
Thomas McCulloch arrived in Pictou from Scotland in 1803 and became an important figure in Nova Scotia’s educational, religious and intellectual history. He was a minister, educator, writer and scientist and was instrumental in the development of Pictou Academy, an important early educational institution. (Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library)
Visitors to the museum can explore the historic house and learn about McCulloch’s life, his family, his contributions to education and his interest in the natural sciences. The collection includes artifacts connected with his life, including material associated with his natural-history interests and a framed print given to him by the renowned naturalist and artist John James Audubon. (Tourism Nova Scotia)
The museum also places the McCulloch story within the larger story of Scottish settlement in Nova Scotia, making it an especially interesting stop for visitors researching Scottish-Canadian heritage.
