Escape Extinction is an on-rails FPS Made for High Point University Game Dev Club's "End of the World" game jam. Play as a time-traveling scientist researching the dinosaurs, but the meteor is coming, so it's time to hop on your raptor buddy and escape back to the present before it arrives, shooting everything in your way.
This game ended up winning in the "most creative use of theme" category, voted on by the club's E Board.
The Process
This was a solo game jam, meaning I couldn't just drop my art assets into the world and let the programmer(s) take it from there.
This was a great teacher/refresher on a lot of the important features of Unreal, including Blueprinting, Widgets, Level Sequences, Animation Blueprints, and Landscaping.
The game mostly operates via level sequences. Jumping on the raptor's back activates a trigger box that starts it moving through the world. It follows a simple snaking path through the woods, with periodic obstacles that the player has to shoot in time in order to keep going.
If the player gets through the path without falling off, they will continue up the mountain, ending at last at the "research base" and going through the portal, triggering the win screen.
A similar level sequence takes the meteor model across the sky, driving home the "end of the world" theme.
Creating the Animations
One of the biggest things that I learned while making this was making and working with animations in both Blender and Unreal Engine. The animations are simple, but they function effectively and taught me a lot that I would use going forward, like in my latest big project Crease vs. The Reign of Tearer.
