Music Curriculum

I am teaching all kids at CKRS, starting from PreK through 8th grade. Curriculum is as everchanging as the world around us. CKRS music program offers solid classical base and inspires students to apply their knowledge creatively in the future. The following is a comprehensive summary of our music program (full text here)

PreK, K, 1 and 2

Demonstrate steady beat; accompany songs and chants with body percussion; sing liturgical songs and parts of the Mass; respond to music with movement; aurally recognize contrast in musical sounds; identify and perform rhythmic patterns; create body movements to enhance songs; improvise musical sounds by using classroom instruments, body percussion, and/or movement; recognize form in music; recognize and describe changes in musical expression

3 and 4

  Identify the four orchestral families by sight and sound; perform rhythmic patterns; utilize movement to illustrate meter; identify form in music; identify terms and symbols for musical expression; review music terminology; use music terminology to describe the music; explore the music of world cultures; identify and perform all learned terms and symbols for musical expression; build and review knowledge of treble clef notation   

5 and 6

Notate and perform melodies from the treble staff; learn function of the top and bottom number of a time signature; identify and describe the difference between melody and harmony; place musical style in a broad category of style or genre; identify traditional instruments from the culture; identify notation for the bass clef; investigate a variety of musical sounds, forms, styles, and genres through listening, discussing or writing; identify instruments, voice classifications, and a variety of performing ensembles aurally and visually  

7 and 8

Read and perform previously learned rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic patterns; sing liturgical songs and common parts of the Mass; create melodies, rhythms, and harmonies; investigate musical sounds, forms, styles, and genres through listening, discussing or writing; explore a variety of styles, periods, forms and elements of music; identify musical characteristics of music from various cultures; identify the influence of daily music experience in one’s personal life
