Designing Accessible Durable and Effective Educational Technologies for Children in Developing Countries
This mock-up research proposal describes the development of an original educational technological device for children to utilize in developing areas. This research specifically focuses on building a fruitful education for children who are restricted in a working environment at home. While this proposal is not official was a finished assignment for an HCI course, it effectively demonstrates different creative technological methods and evaluations to help those with limited access to educational materials.
Progress in Development of OCR Transcription for Gə’əz
This research focuses on transcribing medieval scripts for identification and recognition of texts. More specifically, this research transcribes Gə’əz scripts for Ethiopian scholars and other scholars to translate and study from. To the right is a website made by Christine that inputs and transcribes any unclear Gə’əz text. Attached below is the link for the official website.
Goals:
Through these research projects, I have developed an immense passion for Human Computer Interaction (HCI). I was able to have first-hand experience with creating original technological methods that aid those who have limited access to advanced technologies. My previous research experiences have taught me technical and theoretical skills in STEM-heavy fields, such as robotic navigation and meta-learning. While these skills are extremely useful and effective, I would also like to develop these skills within real-world applications, more specifically, human needs. As I started to delve into HCI research and develop my own interests and passions within this vast field, I came to realize my inherent desire to develop HCI methods for underserved communities. I began to focus on improving educational standards for children in, for instance, low resource communities and other developing areas. I am passionate about innovating creative and accessible HCI educational methods for underserved communities and am on planning to focus my graduate studies within this study of interest.
