One thing I miss most about teaching in-person is the direct connections I make with students!
I've experimented with different ways to connect online I decided to go with Discord. Students seem to like it!
Discord is a chat app, similar to programs such as Skype or Slack. It’s geared toward video game players, but is used in many different settings.
If you already have a Discord account, you are welcome to use your existing account. If not, you'll need to create an account. You'll need to "register" for an account. You can choose any username you like, but be mindful your classmates will see it too. You can also use any email you like to sign up. You do not need to use your WSU email. For a step-by-step guide, check out this video.
You'll need to comment in Discord to address the weekly discussion prompt(s) located on the folder for each weekly module.
You do not need to use your real name, but you'll need to let me know your username if it is not obvious, so I can track your participation. I may reach out to you in a private message to ask who you are. My Discord name is BreeBop.
As long as you interact via Discord once per week, you will earn full credit.
This is a pass/fail portion of the class and is only worth 10% of your total grade (100 points total).
The benefit to Discord is that it is available anytime. You can provide your weekly response anytime. Use the # (i.e., #Week1).
I only assign 100 points for active participation because it is intended to enhance the course. There are MANY extra credit opportunities you may opt to complete instead.
Of course, you are more than welcome to interact more than the minimum! You are welcome to participate in Discord every week if you like. Discord is intended to enhance your learning and help you connect with me and other students. As you'll see on Discord, I'll also post random things not necessarily related to the class (like funny videos, GIFs).
I share the link to Discord in Blackboard in the main menu under "Connect."
You can sign on anytime! I may not respond immediately, especially in the evenings/early mornings. I don’t expect you to respond instantly either!
You can use Discord through an app (computer or mobile) or in a browser.
Treat everyone with respect. Engage with patience and empathy.
Comments that are racist, sexist, anti-LBGTQ, ableist, etc are explicitly prohibited. Any comments will result in your removal from Zoom or Discord sessions for the remainder of the semester.
