The Student Parliament is the governing body of the Students' Association, made up of Parliament Members who are all current COGC students. As a Parliament Member, you create and vote on proposals for work the SA should undertake. Recently this has included approving funding for the new Student Pantry and the Wee Grants Scheme for student events, and voting for SA partnerships such as White Ribbon: a charity who work with men and boys to end violence against women and girls.
Typically, a Student Parliament Member will complete an average of 4 voluntary hours of work a week on campus.
Each Student Parliament Member is expected to:
Engage with all formal meetings of Student Parliament.
Engage with any other meetings as assigned by the SA.
Support the SA in undertaking its day-to-day activities and/or campaigns.
Uphold the reputation of the SA by adhering to its code of conduct as outlined in the SA Constitution.
The Students Association is expected to:
Provide an induction and training to complete your role. In addition to this induction, you will be added to a Canvas module for Student Parliament Members. You can also take a look at our bank of training resources here.
Provide you with a mentor. This will be a member of staff who will support you in your professional development.
Provide adequate resources to complete your role. Our collection of How-to guides are a great place to start.
Ensure that Student Parliament Members are supported in their role. The SA Co-ordinator, Presidential Team and all SA colleagues are always happy to help.
In addition to the Student Parliament responsibilities above, Faculty Reps:
Regularly check the forum for their Faculty in the Class Rep Canvas module, collecting feedback from and engaging with Class Reps as needed. All Faculty Reps will be added to the Class Rep Canvas module after induction.
Represent student views within their Faculty at meetings of their Faculty Board as well as at Student Parliament.
Attend a monthly support meeting with their assigned mentor.
In addition to the Student Parliament responsibilities above,Executive Officers:
Each have an individual, specialist remit centred on contributing to SA activities and events.
Undertake planning and hosting of SA events or campaigns.
Meeting times
Formal meetings Student Parliament will typically be hosted three times a year. You will discuss questions and feedback submitted by students, staff, and/or Parliament Members and vote on proposals around:
New pieces of work that the SA should consider taking up
How the SA should spend its budget
The way in which the SA works
You can submit a question by completing a submission form in advance of the meeting
You can submit a proposal by:
Completing the relevant form
Submitting it at least a week in advance of the Parliament Meeting
