Nestled in northwest corner of Rice County, Kansas, Bushton is a small rural community whose roots run deep in the agricultural landscape of central Kansas. Originally named “Sorghum,” the town adopted the name Bushton in 1887 “after the wild bushes growing here.”
Despite its size, Bushton maintains a vibrant community spirit and a handful of local enterprises that draw attention. The town’s business life includes an insurance company, thrift store, candle shop, bank, hay handling equipment mfg, wood‐working tools mfg, as well as makers of the “Atom Pop” popcorn popper ...underscoring how local industry can make a unique mark. A library, museum, homeschool coop, senior center, yoga/tai chi classes and rec center add to the cultural richness.
Seasonal traditions like the Valentines Dinner, Easter Egg Hunt, Church ice-cream socials and soup suppers, the Back to School Bash, trivia nights, Santa's Bazaar and more enliven the social calendar. Bushton neighbors know one another, gatherings are meaningful, and the rural pace allows for a different kind of richness — one rooted in place, history, and local participation.
