The Meridian Park community in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A. is bounded by 30th and 34th Streets, Pennsylvania Street, and Washington Boulevard.

It is positioned north of downtown Indianapolis, and situated within the bigger Mapleton Fall Creek Area. While the community is fairly little, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Its History

The community began to be developed around the turn of the 20th century. It not only has a substantial collection of American Craftsman or Arts & Crafts Design houses, however is also notable as one of Indianapolis's very first suburban areas.

Meridian Park Historic District consists of an exceptional collection of Arts & Crafts architecture. Fans of cottages will not wish to miss this district. Found north of Fall Creek, Meridian Park represents the northward property growth of the city in the early 20th century. Elias Atkins submitted a University Place plat in 1890 in the location, and by 1904, other developers had actually partitioned the former farmland into property lots. One principal addition was called Meridian Park.

While it has a small number of late 19th century and some contemporary buildings, a bulk of homes date from the early 20th century. The majority of have common Arts & Crafts details such as overhanging eaves, knee braces, exposed rafters, and low horizontal lines. The architecture shows how well Indianapolis designers absorbed Arts & Crafts tenets. In 1907, Frank Bakemier developed your home at 3128 North Pennsylvania Street for George and Nellie Meier, who called it "Tuckaway." This low-slung bungalow with brown-stained wood weatherboard siding is among the better maintained Arts & Crafts houses in Indianapolis. The Meiers were as wacky as their new modern-day house. George was a widely known designer and buyer for L.S. Ayres Outlet Store, and Nellie was a well-known psychic whose customers included lots of nationwide stars.

The house at 3127 North Pennsylvania was developed in 1909 by Lawrence George for Will H. Brown, vice president of the Overland Automobile Company. The house's stucco and half-timber upper story with oriel windows and basic lines shows Arts & Crafts influence. The district also includes a domestic court, called Washington Court, situated in the 3200 block off Washington Boulevard. Jose-Balz Company developed and developed many of the eleven bungalow, Craftsman, and American 4 Square houses in this part of the district.
