Citrus appeared on The New York Times best seller list for manga five times in 2015.[82][83][84][85][86] In a review of the manga's first volume by Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network, Citrus is described as having emotionally interesting characters with the contrasting personalities of Yuzu and Mei, and their relationship is likened to a "yuri version of the twins' from Arisa." Silverman praises Saburouta's use of reader hindsight, pointing out that Mei's actions can be seen in a different light as the series progresses due to Saburouta giving a slow understanding of her character. However, the non-consensual elements of the manga are described as uncomfortable in contrast with gentler yuri manga that have previously been released in English.[1]

Citrus (, Shitorasu?) is a Japanese yuri manga series written and illustrated by Saburo uta. It has been serialized in Ichijinsha's Comic Yuri Hime since November 17, 2012. It has been licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment for a printed release in North America on December 16, 2014.

It has 20 chapters as of May 2016. The first tankbon volume was published on July 18, 2013, the third volume was released on November 18, 2014. To advertise the third volume of the manga, a PV covering the story up to that point was uploaded to Ichijinsha's YouTube channel on November 18, 2014.

Yuzu is named after a citrus fruit and plant originating in East Asia. It is believed to be a hybrid of sour mandarin and Ichang papeda. Leaves are notable for a large petiole, resembling those of the related kaffir lime and ichang papeda, and are heavily scented, which relates to her infatuation with Mei's scent in chapter 1.

They also eventually ripen to an orange colour, which links to the characterization of Yuzu Aihara's hair. The fruit may also be cut in half, allowing the citrus juice to mingle with the bathwater. The yuzu bath, known commonly as yuzuyu, but also as yuzuburo, is said to guard against colds, treat the roughness of skin, warm the body, and relax the mind, which is why Mei constantly refers to Yuzu's body heat, as well as why there are multiple bathing scenes of Yuzu in the manga.

(1) PREMISE & IMPLICATIONS. Let's admit, the premise of Citrus makes no goddamn sense. What parent realistically gets re-married and forgets to mention to their child that they have step-siblings incoming? I felt like if Saburouta wanted to keep the shock factor, Yuzu could have been informed of her future step-sister and her name. When she goes to school and meets Mei, but does not know her name, the shock factor is preserved when she goes home and sees Mei there; the notion of Yuzu being unaware of a stepsister is ridiculous, though, and feels like some cringeworthy fanfiction trope where the impossible happens for... no reason than to facilitate the story itself. I feel similarly about Yuzu never meeting Mei's father, but I have an easier time accepting his absenteeism since it was the same when he was raising Mei. (Only slightly easier--how does Mei's mother maintain a relationship with the guy? [A possible explanation is offered in the manga, but it is still farfetched.])

Next, the pseudo-incest and the normalization of incest in general. I wish Saburouta would drop the theme of being "sisters" while pursuing a romantic/sexual relationship. Incest is not okay in any terms. I'm not sure if Saburouta is attempting to imply that biological relationships are off-limits by only featuring stepsister attraction in the manga, but the manga that Yuzu reads is very obviously taboo because it's straight-up incest between biological sisters, a story trope known in Japan. Perhaps this is a Western view, but Saburouta should not be excusing incest. The controversy that would undoubtedly be created by their relationship is addressed several times, but Saburouta does not give her characters the depth to seriously address those questions aside from "live how you want," which is bullshit and not enough to address their unique scenario, as that normalizes incest in all situations. To me, it feels like Saburouta made this decision so Yuzu and Mei could share living quarters, have more shared bath scenes, etc. It is certainly something out of a yuri wet dream and is unjustified and gross, considering the way it is currently addressed. I FEEL like she is trying to hint at the platonic sisterhood felt between women and the queer families that can arise from lesbian relationships, being mistaken as "sisters" but really being lovers; however, this is never stated and this is assuming best intentions from the author. (I say "feel" because this is never developed, not even hinted at. It is very often dropped.)

(2) CHARACTERIZATION. Saburouta falls prey to the "telling, but not showing" issue that is indicative of bad storytellers. Let's start with Yuzu. Yuzu is constantly described by others as a source of joy and light. In her good moments, she is certainly so; she is very friendly, generous, and accepting of people. However, something that is a red flag to me is her mistreatment of Taniguchi. She consistently ditches Taniguchi, relies on her for false alibis, and has no qualms showing her preference for Mei over Taniguchi in several situations. While Yuzu is very confused with her queer emotions, no sincere apologies or attempts to make it up to Taniguchi are ever offered. At the same time, Taniguchi never complains about this nor is her perspective ever very important (with the exclusion of a small arc in the manga), but I really like her character because I feel like Saburouta did such a great job SHOWING us what kind of person she is without intending to do so. Not only is she funny, charming, and cool, she's very reliable for anyone she calls a friend, and pretty mischievous.

(3) PLOT LINE. Saburouta has no idea how to create meaningful action/tension (with the exception of the latest manga chapter, which I will not detail), and believes that throwing in more characters will inevitably lead to more collisions that we will find interesting. Matsuri is a case in point here, and also demonstrates Saburouta's unwillingness to delve into serious, adult themes, despite having no issues hinting towards sex and homosexuality. Matsuri is fucking terrible at the start, and almost gets Mei raped. However, Matsuri is barely punished for this, nor is this directly addressed; not to mention, the method Saburouta uses to get Mei into such an ultimatum is stupid. The arc is overall extremely non-entertaining, and Matsuri is an annoyance and inconsistent for the sake of seeming mysterious. The things that happen, again, feel very much like cringeworthy fanfiction.

(4) ARTWORK. I would argue that this is the only saving grace of Citrus from my perspective. The artwork is absolutely stunning, and the anime gets close, but just doesn't give Saburouta justice for her detail and idealization of these girls. I would argue that it's one of the most beautiful I've seen, and the art style was definitely something that kept me going in the manga despite all my other reservations. I wish Saburouta would leave the storytelling to someone else and focus on illustrating.

My only tiny thing that I don't expect to be fulfilled by a Japanese author, who lives in a homogeneous society: I wish depictions of these girls' bodies could be more diverse. I wish they were more realistic. The most diversity we're really allowed is breast size and hair color. What about dark-skinned characters? Thicc girls with real curves? Hell, even trans girls? But I know that's asking way too much, so don't consider this a real point of contention. It's a critique of most manga at this point.

Thoughts? Opinions? I know this is a lot, so please reply to the point that interests you if that makes it easier. I must say that despite all my critiques, I'm happy that Citrus exists. I can occasionally find some enjoyment in the manga, and it's a little cathartic as I am in an LDR and it helps when I miss my fiance too much. I hope reading this makes you think about your future mangas more deeply, and as a fandom, we can push for more representative and well-executed yuri stories. If anything, breaking down Citrus really makes me want to try my hand at authoring a good lesbian story.

It's here aaaaaaa I've been waiting soooo longgg

I hope i see more ships like harumi x matsuri omg i hope i'm going to see that ship

Ahhhhh I've missed this manga so much

Just finished the english dub of Citrus (saw the sub while it was airing, also really liked the dub btw) and finished chapter 1 of the manga. Wanted to ask before I got too deep though should I read through Citrus first and then Citrus+, or read it all in the order MangaCafe has it in? 17dc91bb1f
