The focus is on moving from pilot, to production capacity at scale. You might hear it called a demo plant, a flagship, semi-commercial… or the well known FOAK plant: FOAK being First-Of-A-Kind. Whatever the name, it’s the moment where experiments turn into industry. This starts with big decisions: do you build your own first-of-a-kind plant… or not? And, if yes, what is the right size and what is ‘fit-for-purpose’, also given that technology might still be evolving and feedstock in some cases might vary. We’ll look at how founders and CEOs can decide whether to build a FOAK or work with external partners, and what smart scaling looks like when it comes to design, location and permitting.
