I'm trying to find examples on how to properly use cipher.exe. Most of the info I've found doesn't cover adding users so they can also view the encrypted file. I'm trying to create a script which will programatically encrypt certain files and add certain users so they can also view them. I'm not too familiar with Windows administration, Active Directory, etc. This is what I've been trying to do:

I don't have anti-virus software that blocks the output file. However, I see from the task manager that cipher.exe does get loaded as a process, but killing the task and re-running the c code won't work for me.Can anyone help?

The following table contains possible examples of cipher.exe being misused. While cipher.exe is not inherently malicious, its legitimate functionality can be abused for malicious purposes.

Cipher.exe warns you that to achieve the best results, you must close as many computer programs as you can. Therefore, the absolute best result is achieved when disk wiping programs are run when the operating system is offline, i.e. from a low-overhead live OS. Starting with Windows 7, a recovery environment is added to each installation of Windows, which can be accessed by pressing F8 before Windows boot process starts. Cipher.exe can be run from the Command Prompt in this environment. (The tricky part is navigating to a Windows\system32 folder that contains cipher.exe.)

this search is to detect execution of cipher.exe to clear the unallocated sectors of a specific disk. This technique was seen in some ransomware to make it impossible to forensically recover deleted files.

We have a Windows Server guest OS running on vSphere which has logical drives that ultimately reside on a 3PAR SAN. An auditor has suggested that after deleting sensitive files on the VM, we should use Microsoft's cipher.exe on the VM to "wipe free disk space".

Given all the layers of abstraction between cipher.exe and the physical disk (guest file system, host file system, SAN, RAID, drive controller) I'm assuming the odds that the application will actually be able to overwrite the physical disk sectors containing the sensitive data are almost nil.

Note that on SSDs, this causes some extra writes which will in the long term slightly lessen its life span. But your free space will be securely erased, so nobody will be able to recover your sensitive files or know what activities you have done on the PC by recovering the partially deleted data. On hard disk drives, cipher.exe is an excellent way to securely wipe free space. 17dc91bb1f
