The picture below is of me after watching this movie. Clearly, I had been crying a good bit.
Coming into this movie, I didn't know much about it other than it was about a couple whose first date turns into a crazy adventure. Without spoiling anything, the movie IS about a couple whose first date turns into a crazy adventure, however, this tragic romance/thriller/crime movie's adventure starts with a violent encounter with a racist cop.
There were many things that made this movie very successful in my eyes. One thing I really liked about this movie were its captivating protagonists. Throughout the movie, you got to know and love the two very different characters as you gained an understanding of their contradicting beliefs and varying backgrounds. Another thing I liked about this movie were the unique shots/camera angles. For this being director Melina Matsoukas's first movie, it was very well executed. Matsoukas is a music video director, directing many videos for well known stars such as Beyoncé, and this really showed throughout the movie. At times, the directors background in music videos paid off, delivering very unique, cinematically uncommon moments in the movie.
While many shots in the movie were good, there were many times throughout the movie that the music video type shots did not fit very well. While I realize that they were going on a "road trip" of sorts, there absolutely way too many long, drawn out shots of them in the car, driving down the road, with no dialogue. During times like these in the movie, you truly felt like you WERE watching a music video, not a movie. Additionally, I felt as if the movie's plot dragged at some points, which made it boring at times.
Overall, this movie wasn't bad. Exploring various themes such as love and racism, this movie had many different plot points that suited needs of romance lovers and crime movie fans alike. One thing I believe that is very important when it comes to movies is making the audience feel some type of emotion. One thing is for sure, this movie definitely evoked sadness out of me.
