I knew going into this movie from what I heard others saying this it was going to be amazing, but I did not know what was going to happen. This movie tells the origin of the classic villan, Joker, aka Arthur Fleck. While in other movies, we’ve seen Joker as this psychopath killer, this movie puts him in the light of who Joker really is: human.
While this movie is a masterpiece, I didn’t give it a 10/10 given that it started out a little slow. Despite its slow start, the movie was utterly perfect. The shock factor and the goriness implemented in the movie was terrific. It might have been too much for some, but given Joker’s tendencies, this was expected.
My favorite aspect of the movie was that it highlighted the human aspects of the Joker. This movie didn’t spotlight him as a evil villain, but as a person with feelings. Throughout the movie, we see the abuse and trauma that Arthur endured. All of his suffering brought him to his breaking point, at which point he started murdering others.
This movie really made me think about something; Is Joker truly a bad guy? Are his actions pure evil, or are they just the result of abuse and hardship that he has endured? Personally, I don’t believe Joker is a bad guy. One might argue this considering his brutal murders and sinister thoughts, but when considering the fact that Joker was driven to violence due to his long endured tormenting and suffering inflicted on him by everyday people, one can see that he is not solely to blame. Rather, it is those who made fun of Joker that are the true villain. While they did not directly cause physical pain unto others, the psychological suffering that the people who teased and ridiculed mentally-ill Arthur Fleck make them the real villains of Joker.
