As a horror movie fanatic and Stephen King fan, I have been looking forward to this movie for a good bit. While it came out in November, I just got around to seeing it and honestly, it was worth the wait. It had some parts that were very outstanding, and some that weren't. Let me explain:
Without spoiling anything, this movie essentially centers around a group of immortal "steam" sucking fiends that used certain types of people as human Juuls. It sounds crazy, but if you've seen the movie, it makes sense. Being a sequel, this film continues with plot points from the cult classic movie, The Shining. Overall, this flick was executed very nicely. Featuring the original characters such as Danny Torrance and Dick Hollorann, this movie did very well in giving the audience nostalgic feelings by bringing back elements from the first movie. The plot itself was great, but considering it came from the mind of Stephen King, this is no surprise. Along with the movies well written script and absolutely amazing music, this film had excellent actors. My personal favorite in this film was child actor Jacob Tremblay. Despite having a rather small role in this film, he completely nailed it. His performance gave me chills and he was honestly one of the best actors in the film.
While the movie was great, there was one think that brought the movie down a lot for me. I mean, I completely understand that the movies predecessor was made fourty years ago, and the original actors no longer look like they did when the movie came out, but the new actors that were used in the flashbacks were HORRIBLE. I felt like I was watching a Shining parody or something. The actors didn't look enough like their original actors, and when recreating scenes from the original movie, it threw me off a lot and distracted me from the movie's plot.
Despite a few things, this movie was pretty great. It gave me that unforgettable, chilling, scary feeling I got when I originally watched The Shining. While I don't see it being the classic movie it's predecessor is, Doctor Sleep was truly a magical sequel and I highly recommend this movie.
