Professional Statement Summary
As a now 52 year old higher education professional but once an educator, an artist, a director, an IT guru, and a business owner, I am reinventing myself yet again. This webpage is a portfolio of who I am along with deliverables of things I am currently learning. I hope to find what the Lord has in store for me next.
After completing my bachelor’s from McNeese State University in 1999 in Secondary Education, I began teaching in Lake Charles, Louisiana (my hometown). My degree has an emphasis in Art Education and an emphasis in Computer Literacy. I joke that I am left-brained and right-brained but have lots of gray matter in the middle. I taught Art and Commercial Media at a public high school for one year before being offered a Director position at a private school. For four years, I was the Director of Telecommunications and Technology at this catholic elementary and junior high school which happened to be where I attended school and where my children began their education. Along with teaching computer to grades PrK-8, I had a list of other responsibilities which included: writing and renewing the school Tech Plan according to NCEA (now ISTE); maintaining and planning for hardware and software; administering the school database SIS; training and coaching teachers on technology integration; newsletter editor; and implementation and running of the school’s closed-circuit news studio.
As life events happen, things change. My husband’s employer relocated him to Lafayette, Louisiana; therefore, we moved. I immediately gained a position at another catholic elementary and junior high school as the Technology Director. Since this school’s technology was virtually non-existent, I built the school’s technology program from the bottom up. Using knowledge gained from my previous employment, I developed a cutting edge-program over the next 12 years.
Again, my husband’s employer relocated him, this time to Houston, Texas. I quickly found that the education system in Texas is very different than in Louisiana. At that point, I made the decision to get back in touch with my creative roots and start my own business. For the next two years, I was proprietor of a Home Paint Party business (similar to Painting with a Twist, but I would go to your home). I was also employed part time in the Testing Department at Alvin Community College just to have extra income. It was there that I learned that I had more potential in the education world that I had not used yet.
As luck would have it, the Covid 19 pandemic shut my little home painting business down. I was forced to seek full-time employment and landed a position in the registrar’s office. While working full-time as the transcript specialist, I attended graduate school online at UHCL in the Educational Management program. After graduation, I was offered a position at UHCL as a Graduate Enrollment Management Counselor where I have been for a year now. My intention was to stay in higher education but God has been calling me back to Catholic Education. I am anxious to see what life will bring me next.
