About Antonio Córdoba

We have taken advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the 10 years of CIDMA and our own goal/vision to achieve excellence at the highest international level, framed in the evaluation by FCT of CIDMA to take place in the period from May 27 to May 31, and its consequences for CIDMA's future, to invite a personality of recognized prestige, within the field of mathematics. António Córdoba, currently Full Professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid and director of ICMAT, a mixed research center of the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC) and the Autonomous, Carlos III and Complutense of Madrid universities.

Similarly to CIDMA, the main objective of ICMAT is the encouragement of Mathematical research of high quality and Interdisciplinary research. ICMAT is one of the thirteen Spanish centers of the Severo Ochoa program of excellence. Its researchers have obtained eleven of the prestigious grants from the European Research Council in the modalities Starting and Consolidator.

Antonio Córdoba began his undergraduate studies at the Complutense University of Madrid and was admitted, even when he was a student of the degree, at the prestigious University of Chicago, supported by the two eminent mathematicians, Alberto Calderón and Antoni Zygmund. Charles Fefermann, future Fields medal and, at that time, the youngest professor in the history of the American university, would be his doctoral thesis director, both in those years at the age of 21. That is the origin of a friendship and close collaboration that lasts until today.

The results obtained in his doctoral thesis are worth an invitation from the University of Princeton and moreover the excellence of his results, resolves a conjecture proposed by Zygmund, published in Annals of Mathematics, allows him to continue in Princeton for 8 more years.

His research has been very varied, going from number theory to the study of harmonic analysis and equations in partial derivatives, in addition to mathematical physics.

Its scientific production is of extraordinary quality, with a hundred publications in the best international math journals, such as Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Matematicae, Communications in Mathematical Physics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Duke Mathematical Journal, Mathematical Finance, etc.

His work in the Spanish mathematical community has been and is very important, as founder of the Revista Matemática Iberoamericana in 1982, or his participation in the reconstitution of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society, in which he was also a member of its Board of Directors, the first president of its Scientific Commission.

On September 30, 2011, he was awarded the National Research Award "Julio Rey Pastor", in the area of ​​Mathematics and Information Technology and Communications. According to the MICINN statement, "it has been awarded for its original, profound and fundamental contributions in different fields of Mathematics, in particular in the Fourier analysis and in the partial differential equations and their applications in fluid mechanics. Likewise, the jury has taken into account its very important involvement in the articulation of the mathematical structure in Spain and its commitment in the disclosure of this discipline in society."
