CUMULATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR CASCADING INTERVENTIONS IN HIMALAYAN RIVERS

Narrowing the gap between Scientific Community , Policy Makers, and Stake Holders in Himalayan Hydropower

Project funded by National Mission on Himalayan Studies

Implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC)

Government of India

Mission

According to The World Bank, only a fourth of India’s enormous hydropower potential has been harnessed so far. The Himalayan mountain belt is a hub of freshwater with potential for hydropower generation. Our Government have targets in the remote mountain villages of Himalaya for development by hydropower projects to bring employment opportunities, modern facilities, and infrastructure. But, risk over the natural resources from water resource development plans are unknown. Securing the rich terrestrial and aquatic resources of Himalayan environment is the next big challenge. Our mission is to provide special attention to Himalayan diversity for a sustainable development in future.

VISION

Our vision is to bridge the gap between the Scientific Community, Policymakers, and Stake Holders in Himalayan Ecosystem.

Our focus remains in, but not limited to:

  • Collection of hydro-ecological data

  • Advancements in measurement resources

  • Scientific modelling and visualization

  • Understanding hydrology–ecology relationships

  • Understanding the sedimentation process

  • Dissemination of hydro-ecological information

  • Cumulative Impact Assessment

  • Optimization of operational policies
