Dance Team (which consists of All-Female & All-Male), Banners, and Short Flags.
Once members of each squad have been chosen, we will provide an orientation and/or information via in person and/or virtually, for all members and their families, enabling us to go more in depth on everything one will need to know about their journey into Channel Islands Squad Life. We hope to see a lot of potential members at this weeks tryouts, including you, with positive attitudes and a desire to be a part of our National Champion legacies!

During Workshop days, students trying out will learn how to properly stretch & warmup during the beginning of each session, as well as learn the basic building blocks specific to each particular squad. The bulk of the workshop time will be spent on the tryout routine: learning, cleaning and perfecting it, which will be performed to music on the Final Tryout date for each squad.
Workout Clothes (including shirts, tights, shorts, sweatpants, warmup pants, sports bras for female participants, sweaters or hoodies for colder weather)
Hair Ties: We require all students with long hair to have it tied back, out of their face, preferably in a ponytail or bun, so that their hair does not interfere with learning or choreography.
Canvas Lace Up Shoes: specifically for students trying out for our Auxiliary Squads: Banners, Drill Team or Short Flags, but can also be used for Dance Team (usually in white, but any color is fine. Shoes can be found at Walmart, Target and various other shopping outlets.
Athletic Shoes/Sneakers: specifically for Dance Team. Shoes must be low top, to allow students to point their toes. Anyone trying out for the Dance Team has the option to use the canvas shoes above that Banners, Drill Team and Short Flags are required to wear but any athletic shoe or sneaker is sufficient.
OPTIONAL: Knee Pads. Certain parts of the choreography ask for the students to go down onto their knees, such as dragging, knee spins, splits, as well as when adding the dimension of levels in the routine. Knee pads are essential so that students do no scrape their knees while practicing. Knee pads are OPTIONAL for tryouts, but recommended. Choreography may require the students to go down on a knee, but having a knee pad to execute the movement is not required. Knee pads with hard plastic pieces (such as ones used for skating, roller blading, etc.) are not recommended for any teams. If chosen as a new member of a squad, knee pads are required for practice.
Water! Have water handy and drink a lot when given water breaks while learning the routines. Either buy a bottle on your way in, or if you have a reusable bottle, like a Thermos, Hydroflask, etc., fill it up and bring it with you! It is important to HYDRATE at all times, as heat exhaustion is plausible and has happened in the past.

A 2.0 GPA is required for all students that wish to participate in any Squad, as well as any other extra-curricular activities and sports at Channel Islands High School.
Chronic absenteeism will not be tolerated. You cannot participate in any Squad if attendance in practices/classes is subpar. Poor attendance will result in separation from the team.
Being a member of our National Champion ranked squads requires a year-long commitment. This may be a shock to a family that is used to seeing their child at home, as we are training students from the ground up. Usually starting in July, practices are daily (except for Sundays) and continue throughout the year. We understand that there may be pre-planned vacations already set for the summer, and these will be dealt with on a one-on-one basis, if you are chosen to be a part of one of the teams.
Historically, squad members cannot play sports AND be a member on a squad, primarily because practice times and competition dates conflict with one another. This also affects any members who think they can juggle working a job and being on the a squad. We do not allow squad members to work jobs that conflict with squad practice and competitions.
The cost per member can start from a minimum of $500. Because this is a performance based activity, we ask that parents donate toward their student's uniform, as well as other expenses that it takes to run the teams, such as competition fees, music fees, and hotel fees for national competition weekends. Costs are asked in increments throughout the year, with the exception of uniform costs, which need to be paid in full in order to have the uniforms in time for performances and competitions. To minimize the amount of money needed by each student, we ask for participation of fundraisers that are held during the year. $500 is the minimum amount needed to participate. Throughout the year, especially during competition season, monetary asks will be needed to feed the students during overnight competition weekends.
All students at Channel Islands, as well as the Oxnard Union High School District, who participate in sports or now any physical activity must be cleared through athleticclearance.com. Please go to the Athletic Clearance page on this website for more information on how to complete this process.
If chosen for the team, you must complete this to participate.
Becoming a member of a squad will enroll you into the CTE Dance Performance Pathway at Channel Islands High. In your first year, you will be enrolled in the CTE course: Choreography. Then your second year into the Choreography Honors. If you continue on for more than 2 years, then you are able to continue with the Choreography Performance and Choreography Mentorship courses. For the first two years of the pathway, you will receive CTE credits. Afte the first initial two years, squad members will earn Fine Arts credit and/or elective credit on their transcript. These classes count toward the F: Visual and Performing Arts component for A-G Requirements, as well as toward your credits toward graduation.
All incoming freshmen (currently 8th graders), as well as current Channel Islands students are eligible to tryout for the squad. Students trying out must be academically sound, with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Dance Team: is a blanket term used to include both our All-Female & All-Male dance teams combined. Members of the Dance Team are used to perform and compete in various dance divisions, including:
-All-Female (aka Medium Hip Hop)
-All-Male
-Coed Hip Hop (aka Large Hip Hop)
-Dance/Drill (routine showcasing both military and other various styles of dance)
-JV Hip Hop
-Small Military (in which members showcase various with an emphasis on marching styles, sharp arm and head movements, as well as highlights through flexibility, kicklines, lifts, headstands, etc, while moving in and out of various floor patterns).
-Song/Pom
The dance team trains in multiple styles of dance and movement, including open style choreography, hip hop, jazz funk, pom, jazz, partnering, tricking, isolation, popping, breaking, ticking, housing, locking, whacking, voguing, military/drill, etc. Because the Drill Team is currently non-existent as it’s own separate squad at CI, the dance team members will represent the void left in their absence performing military routines for the pre-show at all home varsity football games and any parades scheduled to compete in during the Fall Season. In essence, the dance team has reverted back to a Dance/Drill Team. Members chosen for sideline Song/Pom cheer on the sideline for all Varsity home football games, alongside Varsity Cheer and Short Flags
Banners: derives from the marching band auxiliary unit. Members of this team carry the "Banner" or shields that usually display our school name, initials and/or mascot. Banners’ routines are military/drill team-based: showcasing various marching styles, sharp arm and head movements, as well as highlights in flexibility, while moving in and out of various floor patterns, all while bearing a shield on their right arm. As a part of the marching band auxiliary unit, Banners will participate in the pre-show for all home varsity football games and any parades scheduled to compete in during the Fall season.
Short Flags: also derives from the marching band auxiliary unit. Short Flags requires members to twirl one flag, a pair of flags, and sometimes even three or four flags while performing to music. Besides twirling, members are executing tricks, tossing flags to one another, while bouncing through intricate formation changes and floor patterns and showcasing lifts, mounts and flexibility highlights. They include sharp arm and head movements and through the United Spirit Association are considered a Spirit Squad: which consists of four entities- Cheer, Song/Pom, Pep/Short Flags & Mascot. As a Spirit Squad, Short Flags cheers on the sideline for all Varsity home football games, alongside Varsity Cheer and Song/Pom. As a part of the marching band auxiliary unit, Short Flags will participate in the pre-show for all home varsity football games and any parades scheduled to compete in during the Fall season.
No. No prior experience needed! Just a great attitude, the drive to learn and lots of motivation! As long as you are always giving your 100%, there is a place for you on our award-winning squads.
Stretch! Stretch! STRETCH! If there is one thing we could recommend for you to prepare for tryouts, is to start stretching, especially your LEGS! Once you are a part of a squad, splits are required. In the past, different splits were required for different squads: right splits are required for Dance Team females and Drill team members and left splits are required for Banners and Short Flags members. Moving forward, we encourage all members to strive for BOTH splits, as flexibility will help to excel in all routines. SPLITS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR TRYOUTS, but the more you stretch now, the easier it will be if you are chosen for one of the squads.
Hypothetically, yes and no.
If needed, a second Spring Tryout may happen the following week. This does not always happen, but may take place to give a second chance to tryout for the same OR a different squad, depending on which teams are offered during that week.
As stated in the Time Commitment section of the 'Other Important Information' section above, being a member of our National Champion ranked squads requires a year-long commitment. Squad members cannot play sports, either club or for the school, AND be a member on a squad, primarily because practice times and competition dates conflict with one another. This also correlates with any members who are thinking about juggling working a job and being on the a squad. We do not allow squad members to work jobs that conflict with squad practice and competitions, and because our schedule is demanding, members almost never hold a job unless they are working solely on Sundays.
Fall Tryouts are held on a need to fill basis. If the coaching staff feels that more members are needed for the team, Fall Tryouts will be held usually the during the second week of new school year.
Students should not wait for Fall to tryout, as Summer is imperative for training for the new year. There is no guarantee Fall Tryouts will be held, as teams may not have any have open spots in the Fall.
Any questions regarding the tryout process? Feel free to email Coach Raq at mark.raquedan@oxnardunion.org

visit him on campus in Room 96 during the school year. He is on campus for 3rd, 4th periods or afterschool, Monday-Friday.
