During this term we have been studying the 60's. We have studied topics including Martin Luther King Jr, The Space Race, Andy Warhol and a lot more. We have really enjoyed learning about all these different subjects because in year 6 we like to learn about new things. Here is our amazing website to celebrate our work.

1968 - Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated
1969- Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon.
The Space Race was a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States of America to secure the first to travel to space. The Soviet Union sent the first man to space which was on the 12th of April, 1961. His name was Yuri Gagarin. Also, they sent the first woman to space which was Valentina Tereshkova on the 16th of June, 1963. But, in 1969, the United States of America won the race by sending the Apollo 11 crew to the moon. This event was very exciting and historic. Millions of people around the world watched the Apollo 11 crew travelling to the moon.

Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to step on the moon.
Neil Armstrong was born on the 5th of August, 1930 and he sadly died on the 25th of August, 2012.
He was the first in space in 1966 on the Gemini 8. Neil Armstrong was the head of the Apollo 11 mission which landed on the moon on the 20th of July, 1969. He walked on the moon for 2 and a half hours. His famous saying is a part of our history which is:
''One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind''
Michael Collins was born on the 31st of October, 1930.
He was responsible for flying the Apollo 11 Command Module whilst his co-astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin landed on the moon.
Michael Collins went to space twice. His first journey to space was in 1966 on Gemini 10.
Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin was born on the 20th of January, 1930.
He was the second to land on the moon. Closely following Neil Armstrong. He also walked on the moon for 2 and a half hours.
Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin went to space 3 times during his time as an astronaut.
Martin Luther King (MLK) was born on the 15th of January ,1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin had two siblings. His mother was called Alberta Williams King and his dad was called Martin Luther King Sr. Martin was the CEO of the civil rights movement. He planned the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted 380 days. The boycott is regarded as the first large scale U.S movement against segregation. Martin also wrote the famous " I have a dream" speech. He was assassinated by James Early Ray on the 4th of April, 1968 outside his hotel in Memphis.
In 1964, Martin Luther King performed his famous "I have a dream" speech. In that speech he talked about some of the things that he could change. He talked about equality and that black girls and boys should be treated the same as white girls and boys. He also wanted Alabama to be a happy place. Over 250,000 people watched his speech. He repeated the saying 'I have a dream' in his speech to create effect. His speech was full of emotive language. His biggest aim was for equality.
The Brutal force from 150,000 tones of coal slurry killed 116 children and 28 adults.
Date of the disaster: 21st of October, 1966
Number of deaths: 144
Location: Aberfan, South Wales.
For over 50 years, there was a waste of coal and it was thrown over the top of Merthyr Mountain.
Pantglas Junior School was the main building affected by the catastrophe.
We remember this sad disaster on the 21st of October every year.
Muhammad Ali was born on the 17th of January, 1942. He sadly died on the 3rd of June, 2016. He died at the age of 74.
He was a professional boxer and is greatly known as one of the best boxers of all time. His birth name was Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. Muhammad Ali was world champion three times which proves why he was one of the best.
Portugal finished 3rd after losing 2-1 to England in the semi finals.
The final was played between England and West Germany. At the end of the 90 minutes, the score was 2-2. But, in extra time, Geoff Hurst scored twice to secure a 4-2 win for England. This event is part of English football history as it is the only time they've won the football World Cup.
His full name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy. He was the 35th president of the U.S.A. Before becoming president he served in both the U.S House of representative and U.S Senet. He was born in Brooklyn on May 29th, 1917. His parents were Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Elizabeth Kennedy. He was quite sick throughout his childhood with various, sometimes life-threatening illnesses. John F. Kennedy was the second child of nine. They all went on to have significant jobs. While in high school, Kennedy was a right-handed baseball pitcher and third baseman. John F. Kennedy was awarded the following medals for his time in the Navy: Navy and Marine Corps Medal, Purple Hearts Medal, American Defence Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and World War 2 Victory Medal.
Walter Elias Disney was born on the 5th of December 1901.
Walter Elias Disney died on the 15th of December 1966.
Walt Disney had great ideas for his theme park in Florida following his park in California.
There are 11 Disney parks around the world by now which shows the effect of Walt Disney.
in 1928, Mickey Mouse first came to our screens by Walt Disney. He had the idea of Mickey Mouse after being inspired by his pet mouse.
There are many Disney films by now which include The Lion King, Pocahontas, Pinocchio and Dumbo.
The Hollywood star award started on the 9th of February 1960 but the initial idea of the Hollywood stars came around in 1953. The first ever person to win it was Joanne Woodward. More than 2,690 people have won the award. Here are some famous Hollywood stars who have won a star - Michael Jackson, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp. Norman Lloyd is the oldest Hollywood star. The youngest Hollywood star is Patty McCormack at 15 years old. The first ever youtuber with a Hollywood star was Fabian. The tallest Hollywood star is Dwayne Johnson who is 6 feet 5 inches.
Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August, 04, 1928.
His favourite (pop art) is the soup cans and the Marilyn Monroe.
His parents realised that he had talent of designing art.
Andy Warhol died on February, 22, 1987.
Andy Warhol moved to New York in 1956.

Andy Warhol became famous from making pop art. He went to an art college where he learned about illustration and planning and then developed his unique form of drawing.
Fashion is where you can use great skills to make brilliant clothes and also where you can dress up and look fancy.
The 1960's were an age of fashion innovation for women. In the early 60s, people started to wear capri pants and jeans. They also wore plaid button down dresses at the end of the decade. Colourful dresses were also popular.
During the 60's, the hippy trend started. Colourful patterns which included flowers became very popular. Women liked to wear tie-die t-shirts, jeans and colourful fabrics in general.
A fashion desinger from Welsh heritage, Mary Quant became famous and popular in the 1960s for designing mini skirts. In 1963, Mary Quant became the first winner of 'dress of the year'. She was born on the 11th of February 1930. Her parents Jack and Mildred Quant come from mining families. However, they achieved scholarships in a grammar school and both won first grades at Cardiff University before moving to London to work as teachers.
The Berlin wall was a guarded concrete wall that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. It was built to seperate East and West Berlin. Many Germans attempted to climb the wall but only a few succeeded. The Berlin Wall fell by accident in November 1989.
'Space war' was the first computer game. The game had 2 spaceships fighting against each other. The aim was to shoot the other spaceship. The game was created in 1961 by Martin Graets, Stephen Russell and Wayne Witanen. Computer games have developed a lot since then for a example, the PS4 and Xbox.
The Beatles wrote 229 songs and they released many album covers which were designed by many artists.
The Beatles were an English rock band. They were the most successful band of the 20th century. Their songs are still being played now.
They released songs such as 'Hey Jude', 'Here Comes the sun', 'A day in the life' and many, many more.
The 1960's was a golden era for toys. There were more toys than before and parents and families were buying and spending more money too. Many toys from the 1960's are still available now.
LEGO first came to Britain in the 60's. LEGO remains a very popular toy now with many schools and families using LEGO for educational purposes.
