Served as the UCLA spokesperson about LA's 2025 wildfire and postfire hydrologic hazards: With L.A. expecting rain, here’s how likely debris flows are near burn scars (San Francisco Chronicle).
Media coverage of my research:
Identifying landslide threats using hydrological predictors (Northwestern NOW)
New model predicts landslides along wildfire burn scars: an early warning system for high-risk areas (EGU)
Researchers work to better predict dangerous debris flows that can follow wildfires (KCRA)
Widespread western wildfires plus winter weather: A dangerous setup for deadly debris flows (Fox Weather)
Study the changes and recovery of grain size distribution from the impacts of postfire debris flows using the peak discharge simulations from WRF-Hydro as the input (Prof. Pfeiffer’s Lab at Western Washington University). Leading a review paper initiative on "the role of soil moisture in climate-driven compound hazards" in the RUBISCO soil moisture working group organized by the Oak Ridge National Lab. Proposal accepted by Nature Geoscience. Full article in progress.
I was selected to go to this wonderful summer field course sponsored by the Center for Land Surface Hazards (CLaSH).
I spent 6 days learning and conducting field surveys in a postfire watershed in Fort Collins, CO, from Jul 17-22, 2023. There, I gained hands-on experience with Uncrewed Arial Vehicles (UAVs) and Photogrammetry, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), and kinematic GPS and learned how to design and implement field surveys for surface change detection.
Starting June 2023, I have been serving as the mentor for the senior thesis of our undergraduate researcher Aidan Ocampo. Aidan's 2023 summer research was funded by NSF's Asian American and Pacific Islander research grant under the AGILE Professional Development Program (AAPIG).
Aidan gave a poster presentation on our newest study entitled "One-Way Coupled Post-Fire Debris Flow Modeling Using WRF-Hydro and RAMMS" during the 2023 AGU in San Francisco, CA.
Soil moisture working group organized by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Starting June 2024, I have been leading interdisciplinary collaborations for a review paper on "soil moisture in compound hazards"
Team members from various institutes including ETH Zürich, University of Utrecht, Pacific Northwest National Lab, Oak Ridge National Lab, University of Nevada, Montana Tech, etc.
Forced Component Estimation Statistical Method Intercomparison Project (ForceSMIP) in-person hackathon at NCAR, Boulder, CO, from Aug 28-31, 2023.
I received the Convergence Research (CORE) Institute 2023 Fellowship in May 2023. This is a fellowship program supported by NSF and UC-San Diego.
I spent 6 weeks attending bootcamps and idea incubation meetings on the topic "Tackling Climate-Induced Challenges with AI".
I was on a wildfire team working with geologists, hydrologists, atmospheric scientists, data scientists, and economists from universities, national labs, and data companies
I'm serving as a student convener for the 2023 AGU session EP11D - Drivers of Earth's Surface Change in an Era of Rapid Climate and Land Use Change
I was invited to give a talk at Dr. Dongfeng Li's Lab meeting at Peking University in December 2023.
