Sustainability

Some reflections and resources on repair, maintenance, and the
bigger picture of dealing with waste from electrical and electronic equipment

How do we change the situation at a community level?

We are but a small group of individuals making a modest attempt to save people the cost of buying new things. We are going against the grain here, as the current practice is to throw away and buy more.

So, to start, we encourage repair and explain thoroughly what we are doing. Repair involves the person who brings in the item.

And, we support sharing items with others. We help find others who might want something someone else does not.

Why not donate to the British Heart Foundation, Oxfam, Cancer Research, or others?

We advocate the use of platforms like Olio, Gumtree, or eBay to buy second hand items, or to sell or donate.

We face all manner of challenges to keep things from the bin. Items designed not to be repaired, parts that are difficult to find.

Recycling

Westminster City Council offers an electrical and electronic waste recycling service.

Don't put in vapes though!

Batteries can be recycled in Tesco, local libraries, and Sainsbury's.

Printer Toners can be recycled at Rymans or Currys. Here is a link.

Mobile phones and tablets can be recycled at Currys.

Light bulbs can be recycled at Robert Dyas. Or B&Q.

For professsional repairers, here's a list for London.

The Restart Project

How do we deal with the fast growing mountain of waste? The Restart Project was established in 2010 to tackle the problem.

Recent research shows 40% of WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is repairable.

One way to make it easier to repair is to change government policy.
