The Aiken Intermediate Library Media Center serves approximately 500 students and 60 staff members. Everyone in our AIS family is encouraged to use our resources and space. The collection houses approximately 7,700 books with a copyright age of 2016 and 10 network computers available for student and staff use. Our collection contains:
A wide variety of books with a wide range of Lexile levels
A balanced collection of fiction and nonfiction
Books spanning a wide range of genres (historical, graphic novels, Spanish titles, mystery, and more)
A professional room containing class sets of books as well as professional books to encourage best practice and lifelong learning.
An on-line catalog, Follett Destiny, which is used to inventory and manage all materials
To provide materials and services appropriate to curriculum of the school.
To provide materials and services that meets the information and recreational reading needs of the learning community.
To provide opportunities for collaboration with other educators to incorporate information literacy into instruction.
To encourage the integration and appropriate use of technology into the curriculum.
To provide leadership opportunities to students though library media center programs.
To encourage literacy through special literacy events such as: Book Lover's Day, DOT Day, International Literacy Day, National Library Card Sign-Up Month, First Chapter Fridays, Children's Book Week, Read Across America, Poetry Month, and National Library Month.
To participate yearly in the South Carolina Book Awards Program.
Monthly reading challenges and programs are offered throughout the year.
Grace is extended daily. No fines are collected for late books. Fines are only collected if materials are damaged. The fine is used to replace the copy of the book.
Lamination services are provided by the Library Media Center.
Fundraising is important for the Library Media Center because the funding assists with library initiatives, purchasing materials for the collection, and providing student incentives. To assist with funding, a minimum of two book fairs are held each year.
