KROCK 92.3 - My first appearance with audio
Taken from a Facebook post
-
HERE IT IS - https://youtu.be/WmZm0vJRWIc?si=3rQgFfye0WYy-yaA
With songs by TT Quick, Overkill, Nuclear Assault and more that I brought with me to rep L'Amour
It's in 7 parts (with the 7th missing a fun ending)
As many know I never saved any of my stuff.
Anything I share(d) other people save(d)
So, reliving this was fun
The background of my first appearance ...
Mark DiDia aka The King of Dirt, hosted a show on Sunday nights (I believe 11-12:30am) on K-Rock (92.3 fm) which was Howard Stern's station called HEAVY METAL FROM HELL
Mark came to host a show at L'Amour one night in 86 and got a taste of what I did.
He stood in the booth with me while I did my thing.
He mentioned he enjoyed my programming and mic-work and mentioned he wanted me as a guest one night.
I took it as "yeah sure", why the F would I be a guest, they had Ozzy, Metallica, etc. on as guest and now some schmuck from a club?
Rock DJ's in clubs didn't get invited on the biggest metal show in the biggest market ... but ... a few weeks later his sidekick Mike Schnapp (who knew me well from working with various record companies) comes to "da boot" and ask "want to be on Heavy Metal From Hell this Sunday?
MoFo ... of course I wanna
He said Mark said to bring some stuff to play as well and I am the only guest that night ...
Let's see prior guest were Lemmy, Ozzy, Lars and now Chuck ... YEAH THAT'S THE TICKET
So, I go to KRock with a few friends and had zero nerves ... I was surprised but I felt very comfortable on my first radio appearance and on such a huge show.
Mark made a big deal of me being there and when he introduced me, he said I " did him favors" at the club.
What he was referring to was how I introduced him and put him over.
One thing about the LAmour crowd was, they trusted me and were awesome to talk to.
I didn't just introduce him; I set him up as a metal god who fights to get metal on the air.
The crowd rightfully went nuts for him, because the show was the only one like it.
In an upcoming article (on me/L'Amour) Danny Schuler from Biohazard said "When Chuck Kaye started talking, it was time to pay attention. Chuck truly was the voice of L'Amour."
That was due to the incredible crowd ... YOU GUYS/GALS gave me that voice!
YOU deserve that credit!
So, we start the show, and I picked 6 songs to play. L'Amour regulars could figure out which, but here ya go
Nuclear Assault (the broadcast premiere)
Overkill
TT Quick
Kiss
Mercyful Fate
Rainbow
I remember being told the reaction on the phones was big ... that wasn't because of me, that was because the AWESOME patrons of L'Amour felt one of their own was getting attention.
I was on the air, but WE DID IT!
You see that was what the scene meant (to me), it was like-minded music fans excited to support each other, that is why I brought Nuclear Assault, TT Quick and Overkill with me to play.
They were locals (like me).
In the same (upcoming) article Metal Joe aka OB Militia from Old Bridge Militia said I was "the real voice of the scene" - that might or might not be true, but if I am going on the top metal show in the country ... I am bringing local bands and you guys with me.
When I did this appearance WSOU and Headbangers Ball (MTV) didn't start yet, so EVERYONE listened on Sunday nights.
When I saw EVERYONE, I mean fans, bands, press, record company execs, etc.
This guest spot was the beginning of me being asked to do other radio, MTV/VH1, national magazines like Details, Faces, Hit Parader, New Yorker, etc.
I was well-established INSIDE of L'Amour, but now the buzz was beginning outside.
Again, it was less about me and more about you guys/gals ... I REPRESENTED YOU..
The show aired live and that next week it was a topic of conversation.
I remember Jon Zazula (Megaforce Records) telling me "Holy shit, you had 2 of my bands played on K-Rock, that's huge" ... I responded they deserved it ... it's about them.
John Connelly from Nuclear Assault (who gave me one of the only test pressing copies of their LP) thanked me for giving them their world premiere on a top NY station ... AGAIN ... they deserved it
Speaking of "deserve" a huge thank you to Mark and Schnapp for seeing something in me that was bigger than DJ filler between bands.
If you want to check out mic work, here ya go
Part 1: Intro
Part 3: New Kiss sucks, a L'Amour giveaway and Nuclear Assault debut
Part 5: Overkill (something weird occurred, not my fault) and I make an announcement about their tour with my buddies in Slayer
You also hear me ask for another Budweiser on air ... hey you ask for Chuck, you get Chuck ... at least I didn't ask for SKITTLES (if ya know, ya know)
Part 6: Mark gave me copy to read because he lost his voice from yapping in-between songs lol.
Part 7: They cut out the best part (boo). They had a keyboard programmed with "Heavy Metal From Hell" in it. So, you can hit different keys and get different registers of the phrase.
When they weren't looking, I said, "Ah Yes Indeed" into it, so when Mark went "You are listening to ... " it said, "AH YES INDEED" and everyone cracked up.
I took the Casio and started doing hi and low pitch version of AH YES INDEED to end the show.
As most know, my health is bad and I have a dire heart issue ... I almost went to ER a few hours before someone found this and this made my fn night
THANK YOU TO THE PATRONS, OF L'AMOUR - You deserve the credit for anything I did.
Chuck Kaye
