On April 10th, the class of 2025 participated in senior skip day by taking an unofficial trip to Georgetown in Washington, DC. The event, not organized or endorsed by the school, has become a yearly tradition among graduating students who choose to spend a day off campus together before the end of their high school career. This year, the seniors who chose to patriciate spent their day walking along the waterfront, going shopping and visiting restaurants throughout the historic Georgetown neighborhood. While attendance in classes was noticeably lower, the day marked a milestone for several students as they prepared to finish their final year at Colgan High School.
The day began early for many seniors, as they coordinated transportation and met up in Georgetown shortly after the school day started. Some students drove together, and others decided to take a bus into the Georgetown neighborhood.
“My friends and I all woke up early and we took the bus together.” said Isabella Singer, 25’
Once arriving in Georgetown, seniors were able to meet up with various class of 2025 students and explore what Georgetown had to offer them. While some students enjoyed visiting the historical sites, others preferred to visit the many stores in Georgetown and shop.
“My friends and I thought it would be cool to look at the historical sites since Georgetown is very rich in history,” said Chase Lingafelt, class of 2025 president.
“Some of my favorite shops were in Georgetown so me and my friends took the chance to buy new clothes before going to college.” said Zoha Khan, 25’
While senior skip day was a fun and memorable experience for the Class of 2025 at Colgan, beneath the joy many seniors had a bittersweet feeling, as it marked one of the last moments this group of students would share before heading in different directions. For many, it was a reminder that the end of their high school journey is near.
“I felt kind of sad by the end of it because I realized I won't see many of these people again soon and high school is closer to being over than I realized,” said Zara Sabeel, 25’
All in all, Senior Skip Day marked more than just a break from routine, but it captured the excitement of moving forward and the sadness of leaving things behind. Bittersweet, just like senior year itself for many.
“I think senior skip day was a celebration of leaving high school, but it also gives seniors a bittersweet feeling because we will miss high school and leaving people behind, but I think all of senior year has felt bittersweet like that.” said Chase Lingafelt, 25’.
