Colgan’s Student Council Association (SCA) election for the 2025-26 school year is beginning. SCA consists of student leaders that represent the rest of their peers in school. They give input on what students want to see happen in school and help decide different events throughout the year.
Sophomore Jackson Lybarger, candidate for vice president of the class of 2027, said if elected his goals are to get more people involved in SCA and improve attendance at student meetings.
The five class officer positions available are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and historian for each class. An application, video and interview are required for students seeking to run with the election taking place May 12-15.
“I have a lot of friends in SCA, and I had fun when I was president as a freshman,” said Lybarger on inspiration for running
Campaigning is done primarily through posters displayed throughout the school usually containing a catchy phrase in support of the candidate. In addition, social media’s influence has made apps like TikTok and Instagram a useful tool for persuading students.
Lybarger said, “You have to plan the posters you’re going to put up and things you’re going to post online.”
The elections can get very competitive with many deserving candidates doing their best to win the vote. A good campaign can separate a candidate from the large pool of aspiring officers. SCA is an important part of Colgan as it empowers students and allows them to play a pivotal role in sustaining the school. Popular events at Colgan such as spirit week and the homecoming pep rally are primarily planned by the SCA students at Colgan.
