Boasting a 48% tomato meter alongside a 5.9 IMDb rating, the Minecraft Movie was released in theatres on April 4. With high anticipation from the public and the controversial trends emerging from the movie, what does this pop culture sensation have to offer for the average viewer?
The film, starring Jack Black as the lead protagonist, is about Minecraft, a popular sandbox game which allows players to build, craft and mine as the name suggests. However, with no clear story to base off, the director, Jasson Mamoa had to craft a story from scratch.
Following a group of four people in a small Idaho town, we watch as they’re stranded in a new world, where they team up with Steve to stop an ancient evil from corrupting a beautiful world. While traveling they’re forced to adapt to the world using their imaginations and creativity to craft and build against the final villain.
Although the story was entertaining, at times it just felt like they were explaining the realm rather than storytelling, however this is to be expected as many people are unfamiliar with the game.
In addition, it felt as if the producers were catering too much to the player audience, while this is good for people familiar with the game, people without a clue of what Minecraft is felt lost and confused only tuning in to familiar faces like Jack Black.
However, audiences, no matter if they’re players or not, seemed to enjoy the movie with a 86% audience score on Rotton tomatoes. As it has everything a family movie should have, age-appropriate humor, a clear theme, and a trend of screaming “chicken Jockey” whilst throwing popcorn everywhere.
Overall, the movie was a fun watch whether you’re a veteran Minecraft player or only just heard of it because of the movie, it is an entertaining watch and a unique experience to say the least.
