On April 2, all juniors attending Prince William County Schools (PWCS) will take the Scholastic Aptitude Test, better known as the SAT. Colgan will cover all related expenses and students will take the test free of charge. For most, this will be the first time they take it. The SAT is commonly used by colleges and universities in the admissions process to measure a student’s intellect.
“It’s important so you can get in the college you want,” said Junior Journi Lawson. “They set the standards high, and it helps you get considered.”
Since the pandemic in 2020, fewer schools have requirements for the test as a lot of schools aren’t making applicants take it. Because of this, some view it not as important. However, a blog by Southern Methodist University reported that test-optional schools were more likely to admit students who submitted test scores, as opposed to applicants who didn’t.
Junior Jeremiah Gates said he is taking the SAT to better his chances of getting into college.
“Colleges look at it during college admissions and it shows them how good you are academically,” said Gates.
To help prepare juniors for the big exam, Colgan has offered plenty of resources. First, students have been able to attend teacher-guided sessions focused on SAT prep. In addition, free subscriptions for digital tutoring websites, Khan Academy and Varsity Tutors, are available for students to utilize leading up to the SAT. These resources aim to develop valuable skills that could aid students on test day.
“I prepared by taking a lot of SOL prep and SAT prep,” said Lawson. “The AP Exam also helps you prepare.”
Juniors will be able to put their practice to use on SAT Day.
