It’s basketball season again and the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team began their season in November. Following a season that saw over seven seniors graduate, the team returned five players along with just one senior. It’s a roster reloaded with many fresh additions, including a new head coach, Evan Greening.
Coach Greening is a former NCAA Division III basketball player, competing at Penn State Altoona and Pitt Bradford. There, he earned several honors throughout his college career.
“As a whole we’ve gotten better,” said Coach Greening on the development of the team. “I think we’ll continue to get better. Seeing the continued growth.”
The transition to the new coach has been smooth, said returning Varsity player Junior Brian Doty. “I think his coaching style plays a big part in that,” Doty said.
The team prepared for their season with exhibition games and workouts held throughout the spring, summer and fall. This allowed the players to showcase skills and adapt to aspects of the team.
Sophomore Justen Tyler-Porter, a first year Varsity player said the biggest adjustment to Varsity compared to lower levels, is the intensity of the game and increased athleticism.
Furthermore, Coach Greening said the differences between Colgan, and past coaching jobs is “A lot more people within the program.” He added, “The work ethic the guys have to get better is different than what I’m used to. It makes it a lot more fun and exciting for what’s to come.”
Coach Greening is experienced following jobs at other schools prior to Colgan. Most recently, the head coach at Park View High School. His favorite part of coaching is being around the game still, impacting young guys positively and getting them to enjoy the game the same way he did.
A long season awaits Colgan’s Basketball Team. The Sharks play a total of 23 regular season games from December through February.
