In the life of track and field, milliseconds make the difference between victory and defeat. Colleena Corrigan is definitely making a name for herself. The Junior athlete on varsity at Colgan specializes in middle and long distances events like the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m and has been rewriting school history.
Corrigan’s journey started in her freshman year. She only joined the track team to stay conditioned for soccer. Little did she know that she would grow a passion for the sport.“I started track just to stay in shape, but seeing the progress I made kept me inspired to keep going,” she shared.
Her biggest accomplishment to date was breaking the school records in the mile and two-mile races during last season’s district meet. The moment she crossed that finish line; her name went down in school history.
Most athletes have a training regimen, and Corrigan is no different. She runs daily, bikes twice a week, and incorporates weightlifting into her routine. But it’s not just about her physical grind—her motivation is what’s truly impressive.
When asked what keeps her motivated during hard times in the season, she said, "I think about how far I’ve come since freshman year, the goals I’ve set for myself, and knowing that every hard day pays off."
Her dedication is not unnoticed. Coaches Melissa Tirone and Peter Augrom describe her as hardworking and determined. They even sometimes jokingly tease her for overthinking and talking too much. Overall, they see her as a leader on and off the track.
Although track and field is an individual sport, Corrigan credits her team for creating a family-like atmosphere.“My favorite part of being on the team is the supportive atmosphere," she said, it’s like having a second family.
For the future, Corrigan is planning to take her talent to the collegiate level, already talking to school divisions that have her interest. Corrigan’s story is full of passion and breaking limits, but she’s not done yet. She is planning to continue breaking records and making a name for herself.
