Cardinal district play has officially come to a finish, which means post season
playoff games have begun for numerous Colgan sports teams. Colgan sent a total of 5
sports teams to the playoffs, those teams being Varsity Field Hockey, Varsity Golf,
Competition Cheer, Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Volleyball. However, the playoff
environment is not unfamiliar grounds for several of these Colgan sports teams.
Varsity Field Hockey ended Cardinal district play with a record of 13-0-0, and just two losses outside of the cardinal district.

After district play came to a finish, the sharks buckled up for tournament time. The Varsity field hockey team defeated their opponents and paved their way to the final to fight for another district title. After the final whistle blew, the sharks were declared the 2024 Cardinal district champions. The Varsity Field Hockey team defeated Forest Park with a promising score of 7-0 at Colgan on October 22nd. This victory clinched the Sharks a spot in the first round of regionals at Colgan on October 30th, where they would face Freedom South Riding.
“We are going into regionals with confidence but even if we don’t win, I’ll still be proud of what my team accomplished,” said Samantha Kennedy, sophomore captain before losing against The Freedom South Riding eagles 1-4.
After a 60-minute fight against the Freedom South Riding Eagles, the Sharks ultimately fell short, 1-4, ending their season after the first round of the VHSL regional tournament, but walking away with an undefeated district play record and another district championship trophy to be proud of.
The Varsity golf team took down their district opponents to claim their eighth district championship title. The Golf team claimed their title at Forest Greens Golf club on September 26th, securing their spot in the regional match which would be held the next day
at Augustine Golf club. With their proven track record, the golf team is familiar with the pressure and what it takes to claim a district title.
“We knew what it takes to win so we just did our best and what we usually do,” said Carris Sanders ‘27.
After the Sharks won their district match, they shifted their focus to the regional tournament. The sharks made their way to Augustine Golf Club, where the regional match would be held. How the golf team performs in the regional match will not only determine if the Golf team is declared 2024 regional champions, but also if they will clinch a spot in the 2024 state match.
Despite efforts, the sharks fell short in regionals, ending their season and preventing them from moving on to states. However, regardless of their defeat, the Colgan golf team still clinched an 8th district championship which was an accomplishment to be
proud of.
“We still did really good and won our 8th district title, so we all felt good about the season.” Said Carris Sanders, 27’
The Colgan competition cheer team took a group photo with their trophy to
celebrate their victorious efforts in clinching another district title, and a spot in regionals.
In regionals, only two teams will be selected by the judges to move on to states. The Sharks moved on from their victory in districts to focusing on what they can do to get the same results in regionals. However, the sharks fell just short and did not end up moving on to states but still had a season with accomplishments.
The Colgan cross country team began their season in the beginning of September. After running in several district races throughout the month, the team began to prepare for districts.
The district meet would be held on October 31st. Cross country is run by individuals but scored as a team. Therefore, each runner must be on their a-game and ready to give their best foot forward so that the team can score high.
“I am going to prepare myself to do well which will make me more confident for my race,” said Colleen Corrigan, 26’
The sharks competed in the district championship on October 31st. After the competitors from the schools all ran their races, the scores were accounted. The Colgan boys' team and girls' team both finished in second place. With this placement, they. clinched a spot in regionals which will be held on November 7th at Great Meadow Park.
At regionals, the boys and girls' teams both finished in 7th. However, one runner from the girl's side, Mauli Harford, 25’, finished in 6th place and moved on to the state race.
Though Harford did not end up on top in the state race, Colgan Cross Country still had an accomplishment filled season. The cross-country team was able to send their girls
and boys running teams to regionals, along with Mauli Harford, 25’, to the state race to compete for a state title to add to Colgan's trophy case.
Colgan varsity volleyball finished with an undefeated record of 14-0-0 in the region. After paving their way to the cardinal district final, the Sharks were set to play against the Forest Park Bruins on October 30th at Colgan High School to defend their district trophy.
“We were all focused and motivated for the game," said Cianna Morbeto, 26’.
After waiting, match day arrived for the sharks. The Sharks started off winning the first set 25-22. After a water break and a talk with Coach Mesa, the Sharks stepped back onto the court to fight for another win in the second set, which they achieved, winning the second set 25-19. Finally, there was one more set to play. With the Sharks in the lead 2-0,
they went out and finished the last set with a 25-18 win, clinching a victory in all three sets, their 8th district trophy and a spot in the regional quarterfinals on November 6th at Colgan.
“It felt good to win by a lot and give us a confidence boost before regionals," said Cianna Morbeto, 26’.
The Sharks began to focus on regionals and their upcoming matches. After defeating Gainesville in the region quarterfinal and then defeating battlefield in the region semifinal, the 2-time regional champions were set to play patriot for a third region title.
“We were really excited, and all really motivated to win,” Said Cianna Morbeto, 26’
Colgan's state quarter final was set to be played at Colgan on Saturday, November 16th against Langley High School. However, Colgan ultimately fell short of a winning result, ending their quest for another state title and their 2024 season all in all.
