Tyler, The Creator released on the 28th of October his eighth studio album CHROMAKOPIA, released one year after his album, Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale. Because of this and the album preview with the single Noid, CHROMAKOPIA quickly became an anticipated album.
Tyler on X stated there would be no features on the album. However, even within the first three songs of CHROMAKOPIA, he features artists like Daniel Caesar, Lil Wayne, GloRilla, and Sexyy Red.
On the 21st of October, Tyler released Noid, the first single that gave insight into CHROMAKOPIA. Noid begins with a uniform theme, less than 30 seconds into the song the lyrics change from English to Nyanja, a language spoken in central and southern Africa according to GENIUS. The visuals and lyrics in Noid also enhance the theme of paranoia in the song, which shows Tyler locking several locks on a door and checking out of a window blind frantically.
The full album was released on the 28th of October, with 14 total tracks. Darling, I, the fourth song on the album featuring Teezo Touchdown. It is more of a calmer sound compared to the previous three tracks and includes heavy usage of harmonization and layering of vocals in the beginning of the song. Although Darling, I is long being four minutes and 14 seconds in length, Tyler does a good job at continuing the flow and the momentum of the album making it one of the best songs on the album. After Tyler’s breakdown in the middle of the song, he continues to implement harmonization between him and Teezo. Darling, I also included the audio recording from the same woman directed toward Tyler. He implements this in both the beginning and the end of the song. The tone the woman takes is motivational and caring towards Tyler saying at the end of the song, “...Transparency is key, be honest”
Continuing through the album, the uniform theme across song remains consistent. Sticky, the 8th song on the album includes features from GloRilla, Sexyy Red, and Lil Wayne. Even with the high amount of artists on the song, it feels as if they’re all doing too much, causing the unity and connection of the song to deteriorate. It also does not match the theme from the past songs making it seem out of place.
CHROMAKOPIA was one of the highest anticipated albums of the year with Tyler managing a two-week roll out from when he leaked the album. Although Tyler’s overall production on the album is high quality, the features that were implemented could have been better than what they were.
