Senior one acts are a big deal when it comes to theater as they are a culminating project for the seniors in the class. But this year the directors seemed different in a way that hasn’t been seen recently, taking the production process to another level. Directors having a hands-on approach to the creative process of directing it shows their ability to elevate those around them to improve the rest of the production.
With the directing process being as rigorous as it is, directors find themselves in situations where they must improvise and articulate things differently. With this being a new experience for them, it’s also a way for them to take the next step to improve their knowledge of directing that they will pass on to the next group of seniors interested in directing.
“It was a bit scary at first, but I ended up forming close bonds between my cast members and myself and without their personal input, I don’t think it would have been the same,” says Senior director Julia Sapack.
The factors of casting are different for all as every production is different. Directors having to translate their vision of what the production should look like from just an idea to an actual finished production. And with 1st year actors, the challenges are certainly shown.
As the one acts are a culminating project for seniors it is a special moment for the seniors who have taken the class through their years at Colgan. The program certainly help to shape those who take the class into not only better leaders but better learners as well,
“The program at the beginning is scary to get out of your comfort zone and talk in front of others but If I hadn’t done that then I don’t think I would be who I am today,” says Sapack.
