After school, Colgan is as energetic as it is during the school day. There are many activities and clubs for students to choose from and join after school. One of the new additions to the clubs at Colgan is a club dedicated to Singer-Songwriter Taylor Swift.
United under the interest of Swift and also community service, the club is not as unlikely as people may think. In fact, many high schools, and colleges, such as Brown University and Glasgow University have their own Taylor Swift Clubs.
The Club was started by Junior Annabelle Bragdon. She has been a huge fan of Swift since the release of her 10th studio album Midnights. She got the idea to start the club while on a college tour at Brown University after her tour guide told her BU has a club dedicated to popular singer Pitbull at the infamous Ivy League.
“I was like, That's insane! And I got the idea, I was like, why don't we have a club for one of the most popular musicians in our decade? because I know there are a ton of “Swifties” here,” said Bragdon.
However, the club faced many questions from students and staff, who were confused on its intentions, with people even calling the creation of the club “crazy.” The Club Sponsor Malisa Fleming, a fan of Swift herself assured that the club is not “just going to be a bunch of teen (mostly girls) giggling and gossiping about Taylor Swift,” says Fleming, in an email to staff.
“The club will take pride in doing community outreach for causes that Taylor would support (cat rescue orgs, voter registration, etc...),” says Fleming.
Bragdon said of people skeptical on the club “Do not knock it before you try it.”
“I know you assume you are going to come in and you are just going to get everyone bombarding you of like Taylor Swift everything and each, that partly is what it is.” she said.
She reiterated that the club is supposed to be a fun place for “Swifties” at Colgan.
“It is also a group of people who just like talking about stuff together,” she added.
The club’s first official meeting was held on December 13, which is a date that is noteworthy to Swift's fan base, as it is her birthday. The first meeting had a large turnout, with cupcakes to end the meeting. The meeting went through the club’s future plans and ended with multiple attendants discussing fan theories and Swift’s relationship with NFL tight end Travis Kelce.
“It is a good place to just like let yourself out with the artists you love the most and I think it will be an incredibly fun club throughout the years,” said Sophomore Joey Kashyap, who was one of the attendees of the club.
When it comes to the club’s future plans, Bragdon said she has plans for the club.
“We are going to be watching the Eras Tour Movie next meeting in January... But after that, I really hope that we can get into like discussing the actual albums and especially like themes throughout that,” she says.
