This year, Colgan implemented the new Evolv Weapons Detection system in October. The purpose of the system is to protect students from firearms and other harmful weapons. The county's decision to use the Evlov System in every high school in the county has affected students' ability to enter the school and see friends and teachers and for some even to eat breakfast. Despite this, many are left with questions about this winter and how students will deal with the severe weather predicted for the rest of this winter.
The speed of which students enter the school was already affected before the chilly weather, with forecasts of low temperatures, snow and rain, the effectiveness of the Evolv Systems might be hindered and compounding the fast speeds of the students entering the school to escape the cold weather.
"I don’t think so,” says Assistant Principal Karyn Riddle. “I would say since it's gotten colder, we’ve gotten faster of getting students through.”
Issues with umbrellas may arise because of it needing to be taken out of student's backpacks, which could cause other computers to become soaked, or computers being swapped by accident. The installation of these systems is meant to make school more secure and safer but do students feel that way?
“I understand them and because of that I got empathy for the system,” says Senior Noah Sneed, but he still recognizes the negative effects of the Evolv Systms.
“However I will say there are students that wait out in the cold and get sick, I also think we need to be stricter with the teachers...” said Sneed
Although the installation of the Evolv Systems is mostly a positive for school security, there are still many questions needed to be answered like out of school activities like football games or tennis games, which has had problems with weapons in the past, which hope to be answered as the school year go on.
