On Oct. 21, Hundreds of students put on their best high heels and dress shoes and dance the night away at Colgan’s annual Homecoming dance. The theme, voted by the Student Council Association (SCA) was Tangled, inspired by the 2010 Disney movie.
“I was excited [for Homecoming] because I wanted to hang out with my friends and dance to music,” said Senior Will Taveras.
Planning for Homecoming started in the beginning of the school year. SCA President, Senior Viana Phan was integral to the party’s success. One of the things Phan and the SCA helped contribute to was organizing the theme.
“We have a board meeting that any student at Colgan is welcome to, and we would usually have 10 suggestions. We take the top five, and then we send that to Dr. Healey and whenever it gets approved, then it has to be voted on by the campus,” says Phan.
One of the setbacks Phan and her SCA officers faced was what gift favor was going to be given at the end of Homecoming. Her and her officers juggled between a multitude of options for the gift favor.
“We really wanted to do Pura Vida bracelets, but we found out that it’s really expensive. We went to pajama pants and that's also really expensive. So, we had to choose between scarves and hats,” says Phan.
Before Homecoming, students get to vote for their class Prince/Princess or Queen/ King to represent their class in the Homecoming Court. Freshmen Matthew Spiegel not only went to Homecoming for the first time this year, but he was also one of the Colgan students who won Homecoming Court.
“I wanted to run for Homecoming court because most of my friends were running for it and also just because I'm also on the football team. I also just want to have a lot of fun” says Spiegel.
He was surprised to win when he said, “I didn’t expect myself to win. I actually thought my friend was going to win.”
The King and Queen of Homecoming was Seniors Jada Carboo and Josh Starzyc. Starzyk is a CFPA Theatre student and recently starred in Colgan's Production of "Rent".
"In order to win, I just would tell my friends to vote for me. I know I made like a little Instagram post," said Starzyc.
