Colgan’s first theatre production “A Piece of My Heart” ran Thursday Sep. 7-9, with a very powerful portrayal of the effects of war.
A Piece of My Heart is a strong narrative following six women of different backgrounds who served in Vietnam. Act One presents their work conditions and Act Two shows them living with the psychological effects post-war. The play addresses serious themes, including post-traumatic stress disorder following assault, service in combat hospital, racism, sexism and disease from chemical exposure. Each character’s personal struggle is revealed in the PG-13 production.
This intense show is the first theatre production to emphasize modern history primarily focusing on women.
“We have never done a show like it here, specifically we’ve never done a show that features the voice of a specifically Amerasian character before,” director Mrs. Clare Gillespie said. “It was specifically chosen to highlight the diversity that Colgan has.”
The play was cast last school year and sets were built during the summer months. Lots of preparation was done with rehearsals every weekday beginning in August.
“Rehearsal duration ranged from like two to four hours,” said sophomore actress Mariam Trigui. “I also helped build the set for the show.”
The actors dedicated lots of time and energy for such a performance and when it came time for opening night, they were eager to show the audience.
“I was honestly in shock because I couldn’t believe it was happening,” said junior actress Lauren McCutchan. “It was the beginning of the moment we’ve been waiting for. I felt an enormous amount of gratitude and love for my cast and crew, and I was so excited to show everyone the masterpiece we put together.”
Adding to the authenticity of the production, the costumes featured medals awarded to the actors’ family members.
With the Blackbox filled with friends, family and supporters, this play was a success and drove home a powerful message for the audience.
“It’s the best art I’ve ever done. Period hands down,” said Mrs. Gillespie.
