Second Quarter - Lesson 1: Safety Precautions When Dealing With Computer
PPE is clothing or equipment designed to reduce employee exposure to chemical, biological, and physical hazards when on a worksite. (https://safetyculture.com/topics/ppe-safety/)
According to the hierarchy of controls by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), PPE is recommended to be the last level of defense to prevent occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities, but some businesses combined it with other control measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for their workers.
Here are some benefits of using PPEs:
• prevent unnecessary injury in the workplace;
• protect employees from excessive chemical exposure;
• prevent the spread of germs and infectious diseases including COVID-19;
• improve employee productivity and efficiency.
PPE includes safety goggles and face shields and should be used for tasks that can cause eye damage or loss of vision, sprays of toxic liquids, splashes, and burns.
Goggles. A large spectacles, with shields around the rims, for protecting the eyes from dust, excessive light, wind, etc.
Face Mask. A covering for the face to prevent the inhaling or absorbing dust and other chemicals.
PPE includes knee pads and safety boots and should be used for tasks that can cause serious foot and leg injuries from falling or rolling objects, hot substances, electrical hazards, and slippery surfaces.
Insulationg Boots/Safety Shoes. A special type of shoes used to prevent electrical shock and for waterproofing and insulating purposes.
PPE includes safety vests and suits that can be used for tasks that can cause body injuries from extreme temperatures, flames and sparks, toxic chemicals, insect bites and radiation.
Anti-Static Coat/Apron. A garment worn over the front of the body as a protection for one’s cloth.
PPE includes safety gloves and should be used for tasks that can cause hand and skin burns, absorption of harmful substances, cuts, fractures or amputations.
Anti-Static Gloves. The covering material with a separate sheath for each finger used for hand protection.
It is the discharge of electricity between two objects with different electrical potential. It is defined as an electrical charge caused by an imbalance of electrons on the surface of a material. https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/static-electricity
Always use an anti-static wrist strap when working on a computer (except when working on monitors)
Always disconnect a computer from the AC power and from any powered peripherals while you are working on
Always grasp a metal part of the computer chassis with your bare hand before you touch anything inside. Do this even if you are wearing an anti-static wristband.
Always handle electronic components by a non-conducting (non metallic) edge. Don't touch the pins or other connectors.
Never plug an ATX power supply into AC power unless it is connected either to a computer's motherboard or to a dummy test load.
Always use a UL-approved surge protector or an Uninterruptible Power Supply that incorporates surge and spike protection.
Never eat, drink, or smoke while working on a computer.
